Default Bad Distributor- repair or replace?

My '88 CRX HF has a dizzy that's gone unreliable. It used to be a very rare stall-out and easy re-start, but has progressed to frequent non-starts and failure while running. Plus, I often feel power-loss at random times and rough/surging idle.

I found this website about repairing/rebuilding the distributor:
http://www.angelfire.com/ca/Dr....html

I was also wondering who makes the best replacement distributors at the best prices. They seem to vary between $150 and $250 for new (not reman) units.

On Ebay, there is a company called Distributor King, lifetime waranty and free shipping. Bought one there last year after reading a few positive posts on the archives. Mine was $139 total for the Si.

take the cap off and look at the rotor...it may just be a loose screw. i bought a crx that 'didn't start anymore' and that was the main problem

Odd... they have two identical distributors for two different prices...

Also, where do I find the "TD01U" marking on my distributor. I need to know where to start scraping the grease/oil off

Exactly, same here....shame the people working our local napa are great, but the parts they sell are subpar, sometimes awful

Doh, mine says TD02U. Has anyone ever heard of these being on a 1.5L? I did a search and the TD02U is listed with the 1.6L engines. Either way, I've just bought one from Distributor King.

I'm trading an aluminum boat for having the distributor swapped, valve-cover gasket and spark-plug o-rings replaced, and an oil change done. I'm feeling pretty lazy and I needed a good excuse to get rid of that boat

Plus it frees up my time to work on getting rid of my other boat

My distributor went bad, and I started by buying individual parts and replacing them, I replaced the ignitor and the car drove better, but broke down again. I think it's the hot oil leaking inside, so I bought an internal o-ring $27! only found it at Honda. I never replaced it (in fact I need to return it). Instead I called a junkyard and got a used distributor for $35 bucks. Haven't had a problem since, and they guarenteed it's operation once installed.

The problem with the rebuild is the special fasteners, well I tried to cut a slot into it and use a flat head...bad idea. I did get the right driver eventually and it was still really hard to remove the untouched screws as they stripped very easily. I imagine success is very possible, but in my personal experience I found it troublesome. I do like to do every thing DIY if I can, but this one was not so successful for me. The design is pretty easy to learn though, and it doesn't seem to complicated to me.
