"Left Outer Tie Rod" ?
Hello all,
I just got my Teg back from the shop and got an estimate on a bunch of stuff that I need to decide on. One item that they listed is that the "left outer tie rod has excessive play." To replace the tie rod and do a four-wheel alignment, they estimated $217. What is this part? Is it something, like tie bars, that aftermarket companies sell? Is that a fair price?
Thanks,
Ben

That price is outrageous.
Break-down:
(1) Honda steering tie rod lists at around $30 to $35.
4-whl alignment costs $60 @ Honda (my local)
Replacement time: 30 minutes if you have all the right tools
At a labor rate of $70/hour, that comes to $35 for labor.
We're talking $70 for the tie rod replacement and $60 for the alignment. Definitely should not be more than $150 all together.
When I got quoted for the job and part(s), I was quoted $55 (parts & labor) for a cheapy Napa or Autozone tie rod. Then $60 on top of that for the alignment.
All you need to replace the tie rod are:
22mm box wrench
19mm box wrench
Pitman Arm Puller (from autozone for $21.00, fully refundable rental)
Torque wrench
And, other assorted tools to remove and reinstall the rim(s).
If you choose to use the SRR purple tie rods (which are lighter), you need a 10mm allen wrench or a socket with that type of head on it.

How difficult would it be for me to do this work myself, considering I have never worked on cars before, but am going to be down there (with someone else) within the next week putting in a header, cat, exhaust, strut/tie bars, etc.? Would it just be a matter of having the tools and the time, or could I totally make my car fubar?

Takes a little bit muscle. They like to tighten them down the tie rod locknuts pretty hard when they do the alignment.
Tearing a boot is probably the worst you could do. But, the new tie rods should come with new boots.
