Random ass question about poor man r computer set up
I have searched and just havent found the answer i was looking for. Im looking to do a Poorman Type R build in my coupe. GSR bottom end, Type R pistons, B16a head with CTR internals. I have a P30 that has been chipped by Spoon Sports but i know the tune on it will work but I want it to be right, so i can gain all the power i can. My question is would it just be better to run hondata. Second question is: since it is going to be a poorman type r, could i make a type r ecu work in my obd1 car.

yea that would be your best bet,ive used that bin on severl set-ups and i havnt had no trouble from it.

just keep in mind that to get anywhere close to the most out of the engine you need to tune any set of maps you find.
the Xenocron maps are a decent starting point, but without tuning there's no way to know if you're getting anything close to what the engine can do.
also in an OBD1 car, the JDM P73 is the easiest to get working. That is if you want to go with an OEM honda ECU.

the one most people refer to on his site is the Crome bin. It's a decent basemap.

you only need an adapter harness on the ECU plugs. (you need the knock sensor)
I run a JDM P73 in my EG when I have to, to get into one of the classes for autocross.

Awesome. will i need to get a obd2 dizzy or will the conversion harness make everything work with the obd1 dizzy. I have a jdm b16 in my car now, so i have everything wired up for a dohc vtec motor.

just make sure it converts an OBD1 car to an OBD2a ECU. (all JDM P73s are OBD2a)
there are far more jumpers that convert an OBD2a car to an OBD1 ECU, but that's not what you want.
as far as the ECU, depending on which cams you decide, the P73-003 is for the earlier cam profiles, the P73-013 and P73-023 are the slightly more aggressive profiles found in the later versions. (ie CTR cams)
On my setup (CTR cams) the 013 and 023 were identical on the dyno, the 003 had slightly less midrange torque and a little VTEC engagement dip that made midcorner VTEC a little less fun.

You are a life saver. I wasnt sure but i figured there was a way to do a obd2 in a obd1 car. I had a feeling it would be simpler to do a type r ecu. Now what about the cam timing. I will be running ctr cams in my poor R with adjustable cam gears. where does the intake and exhaust cam timing need to be with running either the p73-013 or p73-023 ecu. those p73-013 and 023 are from 00-01, arent they. Are you running standard bore or oversize in your set-up.

023 is 00-01, 013 is 98-99.
std bore, after trying to adjust the gears we decided on 0/0 for the best power under the curve.
If you're milling the head or going with aftermarket cams then I'd worry about setting the cams, but honda does a fantastic job of getting the cams right from the factory.

Cool, i appreciate the help. You dont know how much i appreciate it. There isnt any compitant tuners anywhere close where i live unless i drive about 3-4 hours. I figured there was a way of doing this without having to get a special tune. I had plans to ditch the b series and go K, but funds havent been right and i just want to make some more power. The b16 is getting kind of played out. What kind of power did you end up puttin down?

180whp, not bad considering it's completely stock and a little tired. It gets used, track time only these days.

3 hours away is Morgantown, NC... (near greensboro) http://blueridgemotorsports.com who is an authorized eCtune tuner.
I picked up some decent gains with eCtune, and I've used pretty much everything else out there. Hands down the better program out there for the money.
it's nice to have options.

I guess I shoulda been more clear.

Was that 180whp with the eCtune or the stock P73. How much was it to chip the ecu and for tuning. Im kind of partial with going with the P73 but if the price is right im always down for trying something new.

the P73-023 and eCtune shared the same peak power(give or take a couple), but the power under the curve changed a lot with tuning. Wish I would have grabbed the plot, but it was late when I got out of there as it was.
I chip and tune myself, made a basemap at the dyno, spent three hours on the dyno and had everything flat and the engine very happy for WOT pulls. I've spent around 15 hours street tuning the car since. (I'm overly picky)
IMO a proper tune means the car will be just as drive-able as it was with the stock ECU, but with more power through out the rev range, more consistent A/Fs and of course more potential in the future.

So in your opinion was there a big difference in the way the car feels between the stock P73 and your custom tune. The only reason why i ask i would really like to go with the P73 because it is alot simpler and i dont have to worry about tuning and dyno time. but if ist worth it then i really might consider it. I just want to get the most out of what i got without spending a whole lot of money. Im really trying to go K series. I just need something to tie me over. Plus my boy just dropped a GSR into his CX hatch, so i want to bust his *** too.
I have a stock OBD2a pct (civic typeR) ecu for sale if you are interested. It has a higher rev limit than the P73's. Just get an adjustable fuel pressure regulator and you should be able to get the tune close with the PCT ecu.
Let me know if you are interested.

Thats cool, i got to scrap up some money first and if you still have it then i will get up with you. I m going to try to look for a P73 first and if i cant find one then i will let you know.
