Default Transmission wont go into gear? 2nd/4th!

Well my title foreshadows my problem. Yesterday I drove home perfectly fine to only come back out 5 mins later and get rejected by my 2nd gear. I go down the street and just take it to 3rd and it works perfectly. I go to take it to 4th and get rejected again.

So far this is what Ive examined:
When I go into 2nd, it doesn't engage at all. If you force it you begin to grind the gear.
4th gear does the same thing it bites a little in a sense that it would rock the car but begin to grind the gear @ lets say 2000rpms.

After talking to my local guru some of the possibilities he states are the fork or the throwout bearing since the 2nd/4th gears are on the same cone. There is a possibility of it being a syncros but I will have to drain the fluid and see if there is any metal shavings to determine that possibility. Either way it looks like I'm going to be taking my transmission off.

Any insight on the matter would be greatly appreciated. If your right I'll buy you a beer if I see you.

-Jeff.

[EDIT] Another thing to point out is that the transmission will not go into gear with the engine off.

I'd like to get / see some more suggestions on this topic.. I've already said its either the throw out bearing, or the fork.. but its possible it could be the pressure plate acting up, as its not going in gear while the car is off.

From my experience, or rhymenoceros' experience really...

It doesn't sound like the shift fork or throw out bearing. Eric's (rhymenocerus) throwout bearing busted a while back and it just made the clutch pedal drop to the floor. Couple months before that happened, his fork busted and acted the same way.

Long story short, both acted as if the clutch was bad.

I would invest the time in checking to see if there are metal shavings in the fluid cause to me it sounds like it could be your synchros.

Good luck.

put if it was the clutch then no gears would work.......if it's not going into gear with the car off then it's inside the tranny.

2nd and 4th gear synchro sleeves aren't even on the same shaft. 1-2 use the same fork and are on the counter shaft. 3-4 use the same fork and are on the main shaft.

The problems could be related, or they could not be. Clutch disengagement would effect all gears, not just the even gears.

I'd find a different tranny "guru"

1) i'm the tranny "guru" as he called it.

http://www.worldamerican.com/C...5.pdf

2) they're next to each other.. and since the car doesn't go in gear when the car is off.. with either the clutch depressed or not depressed it leads me to believe something is bent, or out of wack.. he hasn't drainned his fluid to see if it does have metel shavings in it.. the other syncros work fine.. the car just grinds..

I Told him i believed it to be a fork, or pressure plate problem A throwout bearing i thought it could be as well until he told me that it doesn't go into gear even with the car off, then i thought it could be something with the the spring on the plate or something with the clutch.. Again i haven't even seen it, so i was giving ideas..
