Default is it really cheaper to replace transmission, then the replace a differential bearing

I have a 98 accord and have been diagnosed with a differential bearing problem and i have been informed that it is better or cheaper to replace the whole transmission the bearing itself. I have a hard time swallowing this. Also it doesnt slip or leak but makes an unmistakeable humming noise, how long can i drive it like this, they told me to just drive it till it goes, thats all you can do. I have only driven it when it was absolutely necessary.

$40 USD bearing, $150 labor, you'd have to remove and reinstall the tranny IF I was local.
