Please help me out, I was cleaning my wheels today and notice that there were grease coming out from the cv boot(driver side), what is the best way to fix it?

 

ive tried replacing the boot but they dont last long so you would be better off buying a new axle imo

 

how much is the axle? does the axle come installed with the cv boots? axle is also called drive shaft correct? thank you again.

 

I replaced my cv boot on my ex and it was fine. Lasted at least another 30k before I wrecked it. I even broke the metal zip tie thing while putting it on and just used a big plastic zip tie and everything was fine.

 

You dont know how long its been that way. Any bit of dirt in the joint can wreck it (faster than youd expect)
Get a new axle from Autozone/PartsAmerica store. Lifetime warranty.

 

Get a new one, Axle and driveshaft are the same thing.

 

buy a reman'd axle at autozone or something for cheap

 

Bought a drivers side axle last weekend and cost me $70 from advanced.

 

Did you check the other axle? If one opened up, the other is probably not to far behind. Turn the steering wheel all the way to one side so you can see the inside of the ribs on the boot. Its better to catch it before it opens.

 

$70 at autozone with lifetime warranty. id just change it and not take the risk of it going out.

just go the autoparts store. i go to checkers i dont know if they have that there. but i got a del sol axle for my swappwd b16 in the 93 civic it works.

 

If the boot isn't ripped completely open, and the axle isn't clicking then get a boot. If its really ripped right open your probably better off getting a new axle.

 

i got a boot kit from honda for 30 bucks comes with grease that wire thing and the boot works good but i got new axles. i had someone who knew how to do it. so u can also take it to the dealer. idk how much it will cost though.

 

just replace the whole axle. it's not that expensive.

 

i can get a brand new axle not remanufatured for 50 bucks with lifetime warranty i say just buy a new one just look around there are cheap places and they last long

 

One of the biggest problems with using Ebay is returning an item that does not fit. I know of many reports on internet fora of folks buying halfshafts from Autozone, Napa, and the like and not being careful to check that the dimensions are the same as their old halfshaft. Specifically, you want to make sure the following are the same:

Diameter
# of Splines
Length

In the last decade or so it has become cheaper to just replace the whole halfshaft rather than replacing the boot. This is because remanned halfshafts have become plentiful. Also, one has to take off the halfshaft anyway. Rather than then remove the boot, clean up, pack with grease, re-install boot, then re-install halfshaft, you only have to replace the halfshaft.

 

It's only cheaper to do an axle over a boot if you have to pay labor. Parts only, the boot kit is about half to a quarter of the price.

If your capable of doing a boot, and the CV is not contaminated or dry, I'd do a boot. A clear indicator of a damaged CV is a clicking noise as you round a corner under accel. The factory axles are better made and stronger than the cheap auto part store axles. Good luck!

 

one last thing, is it ok to just change the driver side axle without doing the passenger side?

Yes.

 

even tho the passenger side is oem axle but the driver side is the remanufactured(kragen/autozone) is still ok right?

Its still fine.

 

It's okay, but like I said earlier, check it to see if the boot on the other axle is going to open soon. It'll save you the mess if you replace it before it opens.

 

im having the same problem

how much labor wise would an estimate be to replace the whole axle because my cv boot ripped and its makin a squeakin noise when i turn right

 

The labor per axle is about 1 hour. Some shops will discount if you do both axles at the same time.

The sound of a failed axles is commenly a click noise going around a corner under power, not a squeak. Either way, if you have an open boot, it should be delt with.
