Stereo placement ideas
I recently became a victim of stereo theft. I was about to go to school when i noticed my car door was open (parked in a gated apartment complex that has cameras). I look inside to see my stereo gone along with my gym membership, school parking permit, along with two pairs of glasses.
Of course I feel violated, who wouldn't.... I'm finally adding a security system to my car (didn't have one before) to help prevent theft of my belongings in my vehicle.
I have a '00 Civic Hatch and was wondering how do you guys mount your stereos in the bottom console. I saw a picture that i REALLY liked and wondered how they did something like the picture below. Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

You're going to need the 96-98 cupholder assembly (and a couple of brackets it comes with) to do that. 99-00, like you have, does not have the DIN opening in the cupholder compartment. I mean, you could cut through it, but it's not pretty to do.
You could buy a brand new OEM cup holder from Honda for less than $20, but definitely a junkyard'able thing as well. Issue is, you'll then have the "flip" style cupholders, which I wasn't fond of (and changed to 99-00 in my 96).
I've heard of this working pretty well. People get their interior scratched up a bit, but some reason it's more difficult to get out to thieves. Seems like it'd be equal difficulty, but eh.
Also, you'll probably have to extend your radio wiring harness, but that's just a 20 minute solder-heatshrink-electricaltape job.

As stated, all you need is the 96-98 cup holder assembly.

I really don't see how this is possible. Please post some pics of your setup. You can't use the 99 cup holders with the 96 stereo mount. Or do you have your stereo in the factory spot?

Your interior should not get scratched up doing this install. It's harder to take the stereo out because you have to now remove the 6 center console screws, and the center console itself before you can get to the 4 screws on the sides of the head unit. It takes 2 seconds and no screws to pull the stereo and heater controls out of the car (most of the time, because people don't re-instill the bolts that hold this in). Or they don't mount the head unit to this bracket with screw, and use the sleeve and "install kit".

You will NOT have to extended your wires.

97 civic lx alpine/pioneer h.u.
when i did this, my h.u. was just a little to tall to fit, maybe a millimeter or two. So I filed it down evenly.
As stated you do not need to extend any wires, just bring them down.
Also for the place where your stock h.u. was, u can put that "holder" (not sure what to call it). A better idea is to install the In-dash installation kit, then cut a piece of plastic, or whatever u want to totally block it off. If u use a black piece, it blends in to your car. Esp. if you have tinted windows. You can then put your faceplate in your cupholder and close the lid.
I have had people in my car and say 'wheres your radio?'..
I also have pictures if want, but i dont know how to upload them

Hah I meant I got rid of the radio DIN altogether and have the 99-00 pocket as well. I'm no plastic-cutter.
I meant I was not fond of my 96 cupholders and changed completely to 99.
I meant scratched up during attempted theft, seen some guys on EJ8squad get pretty nasty gashes but still retained their head unit. One would have to be pretty "skilled" to scratch up during the install.
Ah, good to see the wires reach just fine. I've never been too deep in the dash.
