Default D16 timing ?

Recently I have been hearing about advancing timing. From what i understand to advance timing I have to turnthe distributor (?sp) it toward the firewall . How much should I move it ? what is stock timing? Should I just mark the distributor and move it so when i want to move it back to stock I'll know where it was ? From this little free mod what kind of gain should i expect.
BTW What would happen if I moved the distributor the other way ?
Thanx

moving towards the firewall will advance your timing, moving it the opposite way will retard it. Only move it a few mm's because too much will result in detonation, and you dont want that. If you do advance your timing, make sure you pump higher octance gasoline or else you will start to detonate. To make sure you have a safe timing, or you want to take it back to 0, you should invest in a timing gun. This will tell you exactly what your timing is. Good luck.

I'd like to ask a question on this topic too. In what situation should you advance your timing and retard your timing?

How much is a timing gun . How does it work ? So stock timing is 0 and if I advance it 2mm it be 2 , and the safest way to go back to stock timing is by using a timing gun .
