Default Mini Me question. For real.

My friend has a Y8 with a good head and bad rings.

I have a D16A6 (1989 civic Si) with a good bottom end and a blown head gasket.

There is a 97 civic EX that he's trying to sell because he never drives it anymore but he doesn't want to sell it to someone with a bum engine. Has anyone ever mini me'd this setup? I see a lot of D15B7s, D16Y7s, and other OBD1 and up mini mes.

Someone told us it was going to be a headache do the Y8/A6 pairing. Is this true? The car has to be emissions legal. In illinois that means that all sensors have to be present and that there are no CELs. This isn't california, so there are no "you can't put an older engine in a newer car" laws...none that are enforced anyway...

Is this going to be a headache? He can get a Y7 bottom end for $200...but he'd rather not spend the $$. I'd also rather have the A6 out of my freaking garage.

sure he can use the a6 bottom end. its common and i've done it myself. my only word of caution is that if your going to slap that y8 head on the a6 bottom that the bottom end better be like new or in really good shape. cant tell you how many people i've read about now that have swapped on newer heads and then had there bottom ends/rings go out. i was hoping i'd be an exception but this happened to me as well.

Cool. Please expound on the details of the swap. How different is it from other mini-me deals? I haven't done one before to be honest. I'm sure I could search...but since I've allready asked the question, tell me what you know.

Thanks.

putting a y8 head on an a6 is quite common. but now that i look over what you said again it occurs to me you're wanting to put this engine into a 97 civic not like an EF that the block would of originated from. i dont personally know of someone doing this but i imagine it could be done. swapping the head on is no big deal like i said but i'm unaware if there are more/different sensors on the newer engine block that wont be present on the a6. and if the ecu in the car is looking for some sensor that isn't there, that's going to cause a problem. i know the majority of the sensors are on the head and intake itself, which is fine since what your using is original equipment anyway. i'm just unsure of the sensors on the block itself. you'd have to look at the 2 engines side by side and see if theres anything extra on the newer block.

there's a spot for the knock sensor to go into the block. We're taking the oil pump out of the Y8 for the CKF. So I guess this is what the deal is going to be then. Thanks.

i believe theres no crank sensor on that a6 block so your gonna have to run a chipped ecu p28 or the car will not start if you use the obd2 ecu.

see i looked for a cyp or cps sensor on allData and the only one it brought up was the cps located in the distributor. although i'm pretty sure there is a cyp on the crank itself if i recall from the last y8 block i saw. i think i've read somewhere about somebody rigging up that sensor for the crank on the older block but not certain on how it was done.

The TDC and other crank sensors are in the distributor. The CKF is the sensor located near the crank of the y8. The CKF is a misfire sensor required for OBD2 compatibility. The CKF is on the oil pump of the Y8. That's easily switched when the engine is out of the car.

I think the rings went out due to the 10.34:1 compression ratio that results from a Y8/A6 pairing. wow. That's a good amount of compression.
