Question on Rev matching
I was talking with one of my friends and he brought up an interesting point. Just wondering something about this technique, maybe some of you could shed some light on it.
So as I understand it, you want to tap the gas when you are shifting to a lower gear, or from neutral into a gear so that it's easier on the engine? Is that the proper way to describe it? Is that really the reason behind it? Other than the slight drag you get from the engine picking back up? Or is that drag the reason why you rev match?
Because my friend brought this up: If you rev the engine faster, it makes it that much harder for the clutch to grab something that is moving faster, hence wearing out your clutch. Is that right?
Some light please...

That's what I figured too, but it made sense to me when he said that the clutch had to grab something that was moving faster, it seems like that would put more wear on it. I'm lacking in transmission knowledge but... how does the spinning of the transmission affect the clutch grabbing the spinning of the engine?
its like the stress you put on a clutch when you rev it and dump it...
when you slow down.. if both are going the same rotaional speed and they connect.. then there will be less wear on the clutch... if the engine is going slower than the clutch/tranny you get that lunge forward which hurts the drivetrain and clutch...
if that makes sense...
but i was told this by my dad....
1. Do you want to use your clutch to slow you down and replace the clutch? = 4-500$
or
2. leave it in a higher gear and use a 20$ set of breakpads to slow you down...
you can replace a 4-500 dollar clutch or you can replace some 20$ pads every 6 months and save some money....

if you rev match correctly, you can downshift without using the clutch, it will slip in just right. I rarely have the ***** to do this on my own car but I work at a dealership and drive without using the clutch all the time.

I told the sales manager... and his *** got fired...
Sure hope i dont ever buy a car from your dealership...

When I went to trade in my 99 3.2TL for a 99 GSR.. the kid (litterally).. that took me for a test drive... BEAT and i mean BEAT the living hell out of the integra gSR we took out... The only word out of his mouth was "vtec" this and "vtec" that...

well I know how to drive and I dont grind or crunch the gears. and for the record, I taught myself how to do this on a clapped out eagle summit that we got in on trade, not some new celica or something.

i've learned the lines of my car well enough that whenever i come to a stop or slow down, i downshift sequentially to second, with perfect rev matching.
it took me a few months, but very rarely do i ever have the "lurch" from the clutch

Why are people taking you on test drives?
Shouldn't you be doing that yourself?

Hey mugenmike, how about you grow the **** up. Digging up a thread from 3 months ago just to call me a douchebag over the internet is really mature. If you would have read the whole thread, you also would have noticed that the cars that I drove without using the clutch on were clapped out, falling apart pieces of ***** that were not good enough to make it on to the lot. suck a dick and quit jumping to conclusions
Rev matchin can help you avoid compression breaking when you downshift. Many people i see driving sticks are ignorant of this and i can hear their cars compression breaking. Its stress on your clutch and motor. If you know how to match revs, all your doing is putting the car in lower gear with no change in speed. You just give the trottle a little blip when you depress the clutch, switch gears and then release. Now heel and toe, thats rev matching while on the breaks. Heel and toe double clutching is like heel and toe with a double clutched downshit. But that is overkill for street driving
if you do it properly, shifting without the clutch doesn't do much harm to your car at all. i've upshifted and downshifted without using the clutch pedal. gently pull the shift lever into neutral, rev the engine until your transmission and wheels are spinning at the same speed, and it will shift into gear like butter.
