Best turbo pistons
Greetings, I have a b18 block, bored to 84mm with darton sleeves and i need some pistons to go with. I previously had cp pistons but they seemed to crack abit over a 15k mile period which makes me a little nervous to get more. The car is a dd and i dont expect over 300-350hp. Any recommendations on some that will last?

i agree
i agree
CP's where cracking left and right back in the day, there was a known defect near in the valve relief area... If this is the problem the OP was having its somewhat normal for the older CP's...

Now why would he do something like that? He has a bottom end that already has Darton Sleeves. That would be idiotic, plain and simple. Invest in some pistons and some good rods and the bottom end will be pretty much bullet proof. CP gets my vote. As stated previously, CP did have issues with their pistons regarding the valve reliefs. It was a very thin section and over time the side of the valve relief would crack off. Anyway, CP, Wiseco, JE are all GREAT pistons.

You make it sound like you have seen people have failure with Ross pistons on Honda's, is that the case or am i reading too much into what your saying?

I'm currently using Ross. fully built sleeved running Pauter rods. when I was looking for pistons, I looked at Wiseco, CP, and Ross.... is JE really any good? not to sound like a noob, I was always told to look elsewhere for forced induction.

never had any problems with my CPs, go with your first instinct you had before you had that problem and again, check to see what caused that problem too.
pistons are to engine builders what EMS is to tuners, everybody is good at there own thing and few are good with all of them.
a lot of engine builders swear by JE, some can never get them right. I would pick my piston based on what my engine builder prefers just like i would chose my EMS based on what my tuner prefers

no you're reading it exactly right. i have seen more people have not so good experiences with ross pistons in hondas because of USER ERROR mostly. and some occasional piston slap

With regards to CR. I had been advised to use 9:1, whats the best way to go about deciding which ratio will work the best? Would 10:1 help spool faster? Get some more power lower down? Or would that be too much?

9:1 or 8.5:1 is perfectly fine
10:1 is ok but you are more limited on the amount of boost you run because of heat and cylinder pressure

wow, pretty shocked... would the slap not also be user error? I know the evo guys are loving these pistons and ive been to Ross HQ here in socal, good guys, they are very open to engine builders opinions on there pistons to help better the design, they will work close with most builders to get them what they want...
back on topic though, i agree 8.5-9.0 is great, i personally run 8.3:1, its just what i ended up with, off boost driving is fine, spool up is fine
