you have to pull the inner joint out of the tranny. You can then just remove the lower ball joint and pull the spindle away.. it'll give you enough clearance to remove the inner joint and be able to remove the transmission. It's probably just easier to remove the entire cv axle tho.

Yes you'll need to remove the CV joints regardless.
