Default Help, process of painting valve cover!!! Quick question...ASAP

What would happen if I used regular car paint on a valve cover, then finish it off with clear? I work in a body shop and I have some left over Milano Red paint from my spoiler, thinking of using it on my DC2 valve cover. Thanks!

Will not stand up to the heat. Go to autozone and buy engine block paint.

exactly. I always use the 1200 degree stuff.

Your best bet would be to see if you can get it powder coated. That would probably look the best.

I'd have to disagree with these guys. I've used wrinkle paint in the past (actually did a DIY writeup - in the archives) and worked perfect, but recently I used regular Duplicolor rattle cans on my current VC (2 layers), and then Duplicolor rattle can clear (2 layers). No melting or bubbles in the paint whatsoever after 2 months. Is it recommended? No, but it's definitely doable.

X2 on the disagreement. I have used regular paint on valve covers in the past and it stays. But to be safe, you could always use the high temp paint as a base or primer, then top it off with the left over Milano Red.

x3....I've painted about 6 valve covers with rattle can paint. None of my valve covers have bubbled, flaked, discolored, etc. Lots of people in the valve cover thread have used car paint as well... You shouldn't have a problem.

Just make sure your painting surface is nice and clean and you won't have a problem. If there is oil on it the paint will wrinkle and look like crap.

I used krylon wrinkle paint, and used vaseline on the letters with a Q-tip. No bubbles no problems no NOTHING. I gave it like 3-4 coats on ONE rattle can and had left over for screwing around the house lol. It's a $4 job, just leave it over night for drying I guess. ( Also you could try putting it in an oven for those nice OEM looking wrinkles.)

Sorry I didn't quite answer your question. Regular paint will work perfectly well if the surface to be painted is CLEAN, at room temperature and dry at the moment of painting.

personally i've seen five valve covers that were painted without the high temp, three of them used car paint and car clear, and then my own which was rattle can. all of them were daily driven and they do hold up.

I smoothened the surfaces and sprayed etching primer then let it cool down in the spray booth. So if I spray heat resistant paint will the primer withhold the heat or do I need to take off the primer and use heat resistant primer?

Oh yeah and what about clear??? I was thinking of spraying it with a few coats of clear then put it into the spray booth to let it bake. Do I need to get heat resistant clear or will any clear work? Again I work in a body shop, so I'll use the leftover clear... Thanks!!!

You can use regular paint. I've done it before. Your valve cover probably sees a high of around 200 degrees or so. Why the F would you need 15 billion degree paint?

You'll be fine with regular paint...unless your car overheats a lot or runs VERY high underhood temps because of an exposed turbo manifold or something.

My current VC was painted with a paint brush and my wife used oil based paints (same paints she uses for paintings). I gave it to a buddy of mine who put 5 coats of clear on it, and I haven't had a single problem in about 5k miles. I can get a pic later after she gets home with my car if you would like to see it.

I couldn't find my USB cord for my camera, so you'll have to deal with phone pics but here they are.

With regular lighting:
