Default Cleaning Your IACV, Add this to the FAQ

Ok. Long story short. Bought a 95 Civic with a D16Y7 motor in it. I believe it was from a 98 Civic, I could be wrong. Anyway dude was selling it because after the swap he ran into a couple of problems. I decided to tackle these. I have a good enough knowledge of hondas thanks to this wonderful site so I said what the hell do have to lose but $1100. (price of the car

The main problem was that the car wouldn't go over 60 mph and the RPM's would bounce all around like checks.

Doing a little searching and prodding under the hood I decided to place the blame entirely on the IACV. I disconnected the IACV and saw when I took it out I saw this:

On the left hold there is supposed to be like a metal filter but it was gone and some jerkoff stuffed it with balled up aluminum foil.

I removed it, cleaned it out with Carb Cleaner and still had the same problem.

I went to junkyard today and pulled an IACV from a civic hatch and proceeded to repeat the process again. Here's what you will need:

Can be found at autozone, etc

Tools (Don't mind the clamp, those should already be on the hoses) (#12 Socket to remove the IACV, held on by 2 bolts.)

Ok now the one at the top was the old one, and the one at the bottom is the one recovered from the hatch. Noticed the bottom has the mesh wire filter thingy ma jig. Don't know what it's for but it serves a purpose.

I sprayed the new one on the inside with carb cleaner and let it drain on some shop rags. (You can use T-Shirt, etc)

After all was said and done this is how much crap was in the little thing. FYI, When draining the IACV on the shop rags bang it a couple of times on the rag to get the particles and crap out of there.

Hope this helps guys.

Or, a How-To on removing,cleaning,and properly re-installing the IACV.

But, good deal on getting that one clean.
Those are some dirty rags, for sure.

Above idle the IACV doesn't do anything except hang at about 35% duty cycle. Air doesn't even flow through it until the throttle plate is closed.

If you found foil in your IACV then just wait until the next big surprise.

Yeah I took the picture from another thread. Big deal. I was showing an example of what I found on mines, hence me putting the notes of my observations on the picture. I'll edit the thread and do a ful write up. This was something I did real quick. I was using my iPhone to take pictures and didn't move all of them to my pc. I should have the full write up done soon.

As for the result. The car is now working fine. RPM's are steady, car doesn't feel sluggish.

All that dirt on those 3 rags, lets hope problems don't get worse because of that foil. I should have the write up for you guys in about 1 or 2 days. I'll be tied up with school work and my job.
