Default Getting a JL Audio W7 sub.. Is the 12W7 sufficient?

I'm trying to get some slump-level bass from 1 sub in a sealed box in my '93 Civic coupe. Its my DD & I'd like to keep as much trunk space as possible. Everything I've found about JL Audio's W7 line of subs is great.. I'd like your opinions on if the 12" 12W7 hits so well that the jump in cost / size / weight etc to the 13W7 isn't worth it.

This has to clear my trunk roof without cutting so a custom box is a given, but with a high-power amp is the 13W7 worth it or should one 12W7 be more than enough? I've heard the difference isn't THAT huge... TIA, Al.

I do not believe the output difference to be worth it. The 12W7 is a great sub.

For the money you can get more sound out of 2 Alpine Type-x 10". They take up about the same amount of space as one 12W7, but you'll need more power. So, really it depends on the amp you can afford.

Well the Alpine Type-X's are definitely cheaper.. I just haven't read a comparison to W7 or W6's in their favor. I'd like to go single sub too. Kingbrian, that's exactly what I had in mind!

I was reading a few places that W7's are not the greatest in SQL.. someone said "loud, wooshy bass." Anyone here that doesn't like their JL W7's?

So all I've done on my day off so far is research subwoofers lol. It looks like there is a quite noticeable difference in sound quality between the W6 & W7 line.

I am starting to think that two JL 10 or 12w6's might be the way to go since they offer better mid & high clarity while not as much overall SPL.

I don't want fuzzy, dirty bass. Hitting, crisp bass with SOME trunk space is the goal here .

Then get a 10w6. and a sealed .625cu ft. box is small. The 12 needs twice the cu ft., but it will get you more spl with the same wattage amp.

Really need to match the amp, wiring/charging, and head unit quality to the subwoofers quality to get full potential out of the sub. This should be a good start - http://www.crutchfield.com/App...avf=N

One of the best subs for sound quality - http://www.dynaudio.de/eng/aut...0.php

if you were thinking about the 12w7 you could just put in a MTX 9500.. i think it is a way better sub and its less money

I also agree the Dynaudio is a very good sounding sub, one of the best I have heard.
You may also want to look at Hertz subs if your looking for SQ... http://www.hertzaudiovideo.com/default_en.htm 94

You guys are great! I checked out DynAudio & they look top-notch, same with Hertz & Fi. I can easily fit two 10" subs in .625 cu ft enclosures in the the trunk behind the wheel wells. 12"s should be doable with well-designed boxes.

Sorry I don't have pics, I'll get them later but I'm running this amp powering two (peak) 2000w 6x9"s listed further down the page & am very satisfied.

http://www.theloudest.co.uk/in...id=74

This is my head unit.. BOSS isn't a prestigious brand but its their BEST model.. I thinks its baller!

http://www.bossaudio.com/main/953

So now the only questions are where to spend my money for amp & two 10 or 12" subs lol. I've ranked the below subs on an overall score combining their specs (rms, db, SPL & SQL, materials & dimensions) customer reviews, their brands' reputation & of course VALUE! Tell me why I'm wrong here lol.

1st) JL Audio W6's (Heard them, they're great! Some say JL's are overpriced & hyped.. I disagree!)
2nd) Fi Audio Q (Online audiophiless LOVE these. Great combo of SQ & SPL)
3rd) Hertz Audio HXS 300 D 12" (Serious subs. 100 db, 900w rms, supposedly high SQ too.)
4th) Dynaudio Esotar² 1200 (12", their stats & reviews look great..)
5th) Infinity Kappa Perfect VQ (I'm loyal to Infinity.. Nothing but good experiences.)
6th) MB Quart PWH 304 (12", They have a good rep, thats all I'm going by..)
7th) Alpine Type-X (Cheap, powerful, durable, hits & sounds decent, easy to find... not different..)

Now for an amp.. I want one amp to power both subs so its gotta be high capacity. I'll admit I don't really know much about amps. I need something affordable, preferably compact & powerful enough for two watt-thirsty 12"s. Thanks a BUNCH, Al.

I found a hell of deal on these Boston Acoustics G512-44 12" subs from Crutchfield so I bought them. Boston's replacing them so it was $400 shipped for a 2 FOR 1 deal!!

http://www.crutchfield.com/App...=True

Boston Acoustics makes pretty high end stuff & every review I've read about these has ranged from good (at worst!) to excellent. The downside is they weigh 35 lbs a pop.. but my EJ1 is FAR from a race car. Now I'll just need 2 enclosures; probably going fiberglass there. Then I'll see if my current TheLoudest.com 1000 watt @ 4 ohms, 2 channel Amp is enough to power these bishes & the 6x9"s... My guess is no lol. Stay tuned!

build your system around your power. if you can only afford so big of an amp, start with that. hyphonics amps are great.

the mtx 9500 is very close in tests with the w7. not better so to say, but for the price it cant be beat.

/\ /\ /\ Yeah, that MTX looks to be a good W7 rival.

Now I just need to find an amp that matches up with (two) dual 4-ohm 12", 450w rms / 900w subs (BA G512-44.) I've been researching some of the smaller or newer brands' amps like Sundown Audio. I also like what US Amps has.. Cadence is on the cheaper end but they're powerful.

Any ideas for an affordable amp that matches up well with my subs?

UPDATE! I found basically the perfect amp for my setup so I just bought it.. Thanks to everyone for your input, I'll bump this up when its all here & installed!
