grinding noise at startup. apparently kinda common ??? (RSX-S)
found this post on CRSX and i seems no one has figured out the root of this problem. and i am too one of the unfortunate that this happens to every once in awhile.
people have tried replacing, starters, timing chain tensioners, batteries etc...
could it be lack of oil pressure on initial startup ? until the pump kicks in ? how would you even fix that. how can you have an oil pump prime or something along those lines?
just wondering what some imput over here on this forum is because i know there are some ACTUAL honda / acura techs that float around on this board. hopefully someone can have some good imput and we can ALL fix this common annoying problem that happens to so many of us.

kinda hard to explain what it sounds like. only happens for about 1 second after initial startup after the car has been sitting over a day or 2, apparently happens to some people when its really cold outside as well. almost sounds like the starter sticking for a second.
hope someone on this board can help us out.

Don't know how to help, but I've heard it on my car before.
Does it sound almost like you tried starting the car after it's already running, except its not?

yea i get the same thing on my ep when i start it up but it only happens at certain times like when i leave it in gear on hill or when it is cold but ur right its only a second i dont know what it is either
yea, apparently it happens to alot of people. ive heard that its the timing chain tensioner, ive heard thats its lack of oil on cold startups since it happens after the cars or motors sit for awhile, ive heard a ton of stuff but no real solid answer.
and yes it almost sounds like your still trying to start the car after its started, like the starter is sticking.
just wondering if anyone has been encountering problems bc if this ? or have any remedies ? anything really. seems ot be kindof a mystery.

There are threads about this on EPhatch.com too, I vaguely remember something about a TSB (technical service bulletin) about repairing these on later models, but no recalls or anything like that.
