What would cause both the Crank Pulley and Compressor Belt to cut into the lower timing belt cover?

Alternator mounted wrong? Belts not tensioned right? Lower cover not attached correctly (seems unlikely)?

In a way, none of these really make sense but it's all I can come up with. There doesn't appear to be any spacer between the balacer pulley and the crank pulley that could be missing.

Any ideas?

 

Do you have everything tightened enough?

Is the cover properly mounted?

 

I'm in the middle of doing the car's 2nd timing belt change (and a lot of other stuff). Belts seemed properly tensioned (but I didn't put a guage on them) and the cover seemed properly mounted (although I didn't examine this closely before taking the cover off).

Just noticed that the cover was cut up after getting everything off.

I haven't done any of the work on the car previously.

 

On the acorn nut that holds the tensioner, there is supposed to be a retaining rubber washer. This helps keep the lower cover from bowing.
You can use a 3/4" 'E' clip from the hardware store.

The harmonic balancer cut through the timing cover then came loose. Then it threw both the power steering and the alternator belts. Does anybody know about this or has dealt with it? Both belts are fine with no damage.

 

Yes I have seen this, I'm in the process of a rebuild and noticed this on mine. Its a plastic cover, this is going to warp over time, due to heat changes. 190,000 miles on mine timing belt had never been replaced, so there was no problem with improper installation.

It's a common issue on the CB7's No one has really come up with a definite answer. Although like someone else already said, they are old cars, plastic warps over time. No big deal, as long as your belts are fine and not getting shredded you should be good to go. You can get an OEM timing cover from Honda for like 30 bux shipped.

 

The crankshaft pulley is a harmonic balancer. A harmonic balancer is made up of three pieces that work in coordination. They are the inner steel ring that is bolted to the crankshaft, the outer steel ring that grooves for the belt, and the actual damper which is a rubber disk or spring loaded friction discs.

The damper may be shot, which is causing the pulley to rotate at an angle or even wobble. This happens on other car too that use a harmonic balancer. If you
previously noticed excessive vibration, noise, etc., this may be one of the symptoms of a harmonic balancer (crankshaft pulley) needing replacement. The crankshaft pulley wobbling or rotating at an angle may cause it to cut into the lower timing belt cover. -- You may possibly be able to just replace the timing belt cover; but, usually better to replace both the crankshaft pulley and timing belt cover.

 

really?? heh! As far as i know, none of the CB7's used rubber on their crank pulleys. i'm even looking at the one going on my h23 and there is no rubber involved. Not sure where you're getting your info from.

 

I am doing a timing belt/water pump replacement on mine due to a short lived overheat condition (cracked upper rad tank 1/4 mile from noe) The car would make a groaning sound when it heated up. During the timing belt replacement I noticed that the grooved ring on the outside of the balancer/crank pulley was offset and had eaten into the cover <which I suspect is where the noise came from>

Anyhow, I can easily "walk" the outer ring off the damper by simply tapping the center of the balacer on the ground while holding the outer ring. In my humble opinion, the balancer's shot and neither the timing belt, nor the water pump were at fault here (they were overdue for replacement so no biggie, just glad no internals were affected)

Gonna get a used damper and start buttoning everything up this week.

I got the same problem with the harmonic balancer cutting into my timing cover, and loosing the power steering belt, and alternator/ac compressor belt. But for some reason mine takes a chunk out of the inner piece of the harmonic balancer to the right of where the cotter pin goes. I have had to repair the harmonic balancer either coming off 2 times prior, this is the 3rd and the 2nd balancer just got busted through. So this will be balancer number 3

 

Happens all the time; I rarely see early 90s Accords without cut timing covers.

Any engine that revs beyond 3K rpm must use a harmonic damper to dampen the harmful harmonics produced by the crankshaft.
