Default oem blocks = nitride/ nitrate coating on cylinders? Gone after you overbore?

Ok, here's the story:

Local buddy slowly built up his gsr swapped ek... to the point that it eventually had ctr cams, jdm itr pistons, jdm 4-1 header, and itr head/ IM/ tb, etc.....

With fuel tuning only, we were able to coax 180whp out of that setup.

The pistons were put in by a local honda-tech with 20+ years experience working on these cars...

Now here's the weird thing:

He's burning oil like crazy. Like 1/2qt per week. The tech crosshatched the cylinders before putting the new pistons in... and supposedly did it by the book. He also broke the motor in very gently, changing the oil often, and didn't go over 4k rpms for 2k miles, only going up by 1k increments... He really babied it during the break-in.

He's about to sell the car, annd wants to put something in there super reliable that won't smoke... He talked to another honda tech who speaks to the national hotline for honda tech's all the time... he asked them about this particular rebuild, and they told him that if the factory nitride (or was it nitrate?) coating on the cylinders was removed through overboring or rehoning, then the engine will smoke...

Now I know many here have gone with overbore/ aftermarket ones to get higher or lower compression...

Have any of you heard of this cylinder wall coating thing before?

Are you guys burning oil like crazy?

And if you go with a sleeved/ rebuilt motor, would it make sense to send the block to someone like Swain Coatings, so they can put a new coat of whatever nitrade/ nitride, etc?

off the top of my head I would look at the pistons. either then need to be oversized and they aren't or one/few of the rings may be damaged from installation.

thats off the top of my head.

I would try a REAL leak down test and see what you find.
