Exedy stage 1 or Exedy stage 2 ?
Hello I just wanted some feedback from the type R guys on which clutch you guys would recommend between the 2 because I am going to be using a 96 Spec type R tranny which is equivalent to a USDM type R trans. I would like to know from people who have realtime experience from either clutch. I have searched, but could only find one thread which had a review of the stage 1 clutch, but nothing on the stage 2 clutch.
This is going to be a DD with autoX and a few Drag times probably once or twice a month.

All of these HYBRID people...
And the mods won't do anything.
Because they have a R motor in a 10+ year old car does not make it relevent.
Then why bother having a HYBRID forum, just let EVERYONE who has a B18C5 post here.

Exedy clutches suck the fat one. Every one i have used has had spring or hub failure (but very little friction material wear) with mild use.

I'm starting to believe this as well. My car will more than likely get a stock replacement along with a LW FW.

I daily drove it and went to the drag strip 5 times with the first clutch and got about 115k on it. I'd say I beat it up at the track but I don't drive hard everyday. The one on the r now is doing good and I have over 10k on it personally
I had issues with my old Exedy Stage 1 with one of the springs poping out from the disk which was only 3 months old. Swapped it out to the Clutch Masters Stage 3
Wow thanks for the responses guys, do any of you guys have any experience with the stage 2 exedy ? I made a search so I would'nt have had to wait for responses from other people, but I can not find any decent reviews on the stage 2 exedy.
Ive never had any issues with exedy stg 1 clutches. Ive used a few of them too and not a single issue. I make sure everything gets torqued to spec.
Ive also noticed that act stg 1 clutches use an exedy disc, hell its probably all exedy just rebadged and painted, lol.

if you plan on staying stock go with stage 1. if you plan on boosting or building over 200 hp to the crank go with stage 2. ive had my stage 2 for almost 20k and it still gives me whiplash.

I've never ever had a problem with my Exedy Stage 1 clutch, nearly 50 trips down the drag strip on drag radials over the last 12 months, launches at 5k+, no signs of wear.

how is the pedal effort with the stage 2 ? I want to build to around 190-200whp all motor. How would you say the stage 2 is for daily driving over all ?

Exedy cltuches BLOW ***.
Clutch Masters Stg 3(Fx300) Carbon Kevlar full face disc, reinforced OEM pressure plate. Pedal pressure feels like stock.. but the grab is insane.. yet smooth... its crazy.
Run that and you'll never run any other clutch, I swear by it and so does everyone else that has gotten one that I know of.

its not too bad. you get used to it. the negative thing about it for DD is that its either "on" or "off". there isnt much room to play, and you may find yourself constantly loading up the rpms to engage first gear, and exedy strictly recommends not riding these clutches. you may find a stage 1 would be better if you wanna stay below 200hp.

i got the fx300 also and love it. no problems and Ive had it for a few years, grabs nicely and feels stock at the pedal.
btw, havent exedy clutches been discussed like every week for the past 3 weeks? what happened to telling people to f* off and used the search feature?

First, Exedy is the Global Leader in clutches.
Their R&D department alone is larger than most other clutch companies as a whole. Exedy is #1 worldwide for a reason, they're simply the best. Furthermore, many OEM manufactures use the Exedy's "stage 1" as their OEM unit.
I've used all three (Stage 1, 2 and their Hypersingle) they all worked flawlessly.
For those who have had an issue, did you call or contact the Exedy's tech/ support department? Exedy has fantastic customer support and stand behind their products. IMO, it wouldn't be uncommon for Exedy to look into a failure and take care of the issue (if there was no abuse or install issues) on a case by case basis.
I've been very fortunate to work with Exedy this year (and going into the future). I was a Exedy fan before they became a sponsor and that respect has grown since I've gotten to know the people/ company behind the logo.
BTW, IMO-
Stage 1 has a OEM feel (used on many OEM cars). Fine for daily, auto-xing, light track days (road racing and drag).
Stage 2 had a great first bite, almost like an on-off switch. This unit was fantastic for standing starts and after 2 years of road racing had almost zero wear. Heavier duty.
I now use the Hypersingle w/ Exedy's Flywheel. Similar launch as the stage 2 and with the Exedy flywheel I gained a lot of top end (lighter weight than the Stage 2 with Toda flywheel).
I wouldn't use anything else!
Call Exedy's tech department if you want real detailed specifics for your application.
