Default Hondata S200, Crome, Ostrich compatibility....

Once in a while, I have someone with an S200 contact me wanting a tune but doesn't have the software. I am not a Hondata dealer, and don't care to be.

I called Hondata, and they confused me more then when I started. They say I need a dealer package that includes and s200 (which the customer would already have), and emulator (of which I have two already), and an extra $200 for the software.

Huh?

Is the Hondata chipped differently then something chipped for Crome? Can I get rid of the Hondata, just tune with Crome, and be done with it?

Did I misunderstand? I would think all I would need is the software?

The guy on the phone was no help, and said that I had to have the dealer pack to "tune properly"..... I asked what it offered, and he was vague... so,,, ???

Thanks for any comments.

Did you really expect them to tell you how to bypass their system?

^^^ I thought I was confused...

I wanted to know hot to tune their system without having to buy two of them for the same car.

Logic would dictate that once the proper hardware was in place, all a guy had to do was buy the software... but apparently not?

You can just buy the software, however they recommend buying an s200 to use for tuning purposes if you're going to continue to tune with their system.

Yes, the ECU is just socketed and can easily be switched to crome, but I wouldn't recommend crome over Hondata.

Thanks... that is what I was hoping, but he REFUSED to sell me anything but the dealer package, and I really have no desire to be a dealer for anything.... and he kept saying to "properly" tune you need the dealer package.

After being rude, and insisting that I can't tune a Honda 'properly' without their package, I really became kinda anti Hondata in 3 minutes flat..... Call me a child, but when you tell me whatever you have is the best, and absolutely required, but cant tell me WHY..... it pisses me off lol

I just tune, I don't need to be unpaid tech support for other companies.

Are you a dealer? Can you sell me the software? PM me cost etc.

I know Hondata has way more features etc... but really, for the typical guy, Crome rocks (I use it on my own blown GSR integra)...
Thanks!

I understand where you're coming from.

No, I'm not a Hondata dealer. I make that other system, NepTune.

I heard that Neptune thing works pretty good. Kind of like hydrogen, helium and methane gas!

Ahhh... another satisfied hond@t@ customer

When are people going to start valuing customer service over bells, whistles and popularity.

I don't care at all what features hondata has or doesn't have. Unless my customers have eCtune or Neptune I always tune cars with crome now. If a guy comes to me with a Hondata OBD1 system I convince them to sell it and tune their car with crome or neptune. I refuse to support or deal with Hondata products. I bought a Stage three OBD1 system from them in 2001 and I live less than 1 mile from their headquarters. Even back then all they did was jerk me around and offer no support at all. Has anyone noticed that the don't even sell most of thier own products on thier website. They make you go to one of their "dealers" so they don't have to deal with you. Thank god for Ericks Racing who covered for them and helped me get my car running/tuned back then. If it wasn't for Erick giving me a hand I would have been left out in the cold. Back then Hondata was the only stable OBD1 tuning system available besides AEM so I had no choice but to use it. But now there are soooooo many other options I cannot understand why anyone would deal with or give money to them.

They sure are lucky they have a monopoly on the KPRO market for now otherwise I think they would be out of business.

Ericks Racing
Crome
Neptune
eCtune (only two because its not a US based company)
Hondata

Wow that was quite a rant. Hopefully it doesn't get deleted.

OP: You can buy the romeditor v4 from any authorized hondata dealer for $199 & be able to tune any s100/s200 system using a fully loaded s200b system.

Tom,

I can see how hondata's support can sometimes be frustrating to deal with for a customer buys a system from a third party or inexperienced dealer.

Hondata tells you to contact a dealer for a reason. Why? Every dealer should be knowledgeable enough to handle any technical support question their customer may have about the product.

I would run my company the same way. (Technical support directly via the dealer, if all else fails then contact the company etc.)

That is not the professional way to do things... relying on your dealer as unpaid tech support.

The dealer gets a small discount on a complicated product, then may spend HOURS of unbilled time helping a customer.

Aem, MSD, Accel etc all ahve tech lines and you talk with EXPERTS.

Ridiculous.

Smart move for saving money, but it WILL (and sounds like IS) bite them in the ***.

Actually, it's quite easy. It just takes a bit of money to make it a production product. I had a bunch of stuff to say here, why I never made a K-Series product, etc, but I don't like to get involved in the politics of it all... so... deleted.

Can the guys from PGMFI.org crack the ECUs? Yup, I don't see why they haven't already. I chalk that up to lack of motivation.

Hondata won't ever be done for. Even with other products on the market the majority of customers still go with their product. They are the market giant.
