Just as the topic states. Just as on the rod bolts can use the stretch method could you do anything most accurate than a torque wrench to the mains whether your running bolts or studs and nuts.
most autoparts stores sell a torque to angle tool for about 10-15 dollars those work great for what your trying to do.

If you wanted to measure bolt stretch on a fastener that's installed into a blind hole then you would have to have a drop mic and a hollow wrench. Fix the mic to something immoveable (like the block) and position it onto the end of the stud with the wrench already installed then turn to yield.
Otherwise use the manufacturer's specified method. If it's like ARP then use their grease and torque to spec with a standard wrench. If it's Honda then oil the threads and pre-torque then rotate the specified degrees afterward.
FWIW IMO rod bolts are more critical than main/head studs.

so your basically just measure the stretch by seeing how far it has stretched the end of the stud from the block ?
Also does ARP or honda give a stretch spec ?

I have not seen one for ARP head/main studs. I have seen info for rod bolts but it's easier to get to either end of the fastener.
On F23 and K-series stuff Honda have a torque to xxft/lbs then rotate an additional x˚. It's not a literal stretch spec but it is a little more refined I think.
