Default Head Gasket and Pistons: Help a First Timer Understand if there's anything I should take away from t

92 EX (F22A6) M/T with 217K miles

Almost exclusively due to the wealth of information here, I decided undertake a
learning experience and do timing belt, head gasket, and oil pan gasket all at once
to rectify some long neglected maintenance. Going that deep would also give me
a chance to look around and do some other things.

After lifting the head, I'm curious if there's anything particular that these pictures
suggest.

I'd like to know what some of you that have seen this before think.

I'm guessing the head gasket is fairly typical and perhaps that the head gasket
wasn't entirely necessary. Not sure what to make of the pistons.

Thanks.

[edit] Shrank the pictures to a more reasonable size [/edit]

was this car burning anything? looks like you splashed coolant on top of the pistons when you took the head off.

true but coolant does not leave deposits on the piston's
i would check the walls and if they look ok not scaredi would just run it unless it has been using oil ? your at a very good point that if you wanted to drop new rings and hone the cylinders and get a bit more out of the car.

Sorry guys, I should have provided the additional info from the beginning.

Symptoms:
----------------------------------------

1) Always used Mobil 1 5W-30 Synthetic.

2) Been burning oil pretty good for quite some time. Say 1qt every 2 months. Not putting any smoke out the exhaust that I could tell though.

3) In emergency braking, was getting significant white smoke out from under the exhaust manifold shield.

4) When I looked at the valves, all the intake valves had a similar black oil deposits and all the exhaust valves had a white ashy desposit. This seemed strange to me. I'll try to post a picture of that tonight.

I'd like to hope that the valve stem seals would fix most of my problem.

Any chance, or am I dreaming? Should I just do the valve job and come back to the pistons at a later time if it doesn't fix the oil burning?

Sorry for the dumb questions guys. I appreciate the advice. Obviously I'm a noob first-timer as you can see by forgetting the block coolant drain plug.

yes the valve seals area item to look at but i would say the rings are the item in question all the accords i have done in the past have had ring issues.so if you do nay repairs other then the head gasket i would drop the pistons and install new rings and hone the cylinders, and you could then install the seal stem seals.

From what I could tell eyeballing cylinders 2 and 3, it did not look scored.

Obviously, the measurements will tell the tale ... but do you find that the ring issues you've seen require:

Deglazing and a standard set of rings on the existing pistons

-or-

Reboring and oversized rings on a new set of oversized pistons

its pretty hard to trouble shoot when i comes to burning oil. i say replace all the seals and valve cover gasket to be save. maybe some hoses as well.
