Default Handlebar weights?

What are handlebar weights for? Should I replace them if the bike doesnt have them installed?

they take vibration out of the bars while riding. as long as your not having any vibration problems you dont need them.

I thought bar ends did that...

I understand needing the bar insert to be able to attach the bar end, but the weight itself doesn't protect the bike as far as I know.

Sorry man, but you're wrong.

Look at this pic. The metal weight is on the left, the bar end is on the right. Two different parts that serve two different functions.

so that big heavy as freak steel black part on the right, thats just a bar end?
and the tube on the left that allows you to grip your hand around, thats a weight?

No, look at this other pic. The pieces from the other picture are showing what is inside the bar/clip on. This picture shows the right bar w/the grip, throttle tube, and the weight inside of it. Hope that helped.

i get it now. and sometimes that big black part on the end is aluminium so that wudnt really be a weight. but on an old bike i had it was a huge steel piece that seemed to double as a bar end and weight (that was a 2 stroke single so probably needed it to dampen vibes effectively)
