A/C on 93 Hatch--noisy compressor help!
When the compressor clutch thingy (or whatever that is on the side of it) turns on and off, it makes a horrible clunk noise. Is this normal, or is somehting on the compressor worn out or slipping?
The a/c still cools well, but damn is the clunk loud when it engages. Motor is stock D15B7 with oem a/c
Thanks.

Mine does the same thing... kind of a loud "chirp" noise... not sure if it's normal or not, but my A/C is working fine (besides needing a recharge).
I just always assumed it was normal for that clutch to make noise... but maybe it's not? I dunno... maybe someone else knows...

So it seems this sound is normal? I kind of find that hard to believe that Honda would make such a noisy a/c compressor.

it is normal. That is the a/c compressor clutch engaging. If you look at the compressor pulley when the a/c is off, the center of it will not spin. When you hear the clunk, you will see the inside of the pulley spin. It is rather abrupt and that is the sound you are hearing. Try listening to it on a Ford, it is much louder and much more frequent.
Yeah, I've weatched it before. I'm just surprised that Honda would design something that makes so much noise, and having never driven a 92-95 with very low miles, I was wondering if that's really how it is susposed to sound.
