crx rear quater pannels (oem honda)
hey all.
has anyone replaced their rear quarters with ones from honda before?
most of the outer panel is just spot welded on but where it joins on the roof frame is it seam welded up?
has anyone changed a full quarter before? time frame for removing each side (drilling out spot welds) and using a welder to plug weld it all back up??
thanks!

i did have my quarters replaced but i was dont by a body shop...they had it for about a week and a half so i dont know how long it would take with a driveway DIY...i think its a big pain in the *** tho thats why i sent it to a body shop..post in the body and paint forum or even the welding/fab section....i think you'll get a better response
in stock here, i can get a pair within 2 days of ordering, i can also get a few pairs shipped from honda singapore for cheaper.
then again they are $700 bux a side lol

OR, since im guessing the reason your wanting this is because the rust above the rear fender well, you can take it to a body shop, have them cut it out and replace it, i got mine done on both sides and paint for around 600 dollars..
nope my wing is beyond wasted. was covered in over 2 cm of bodyfiller almost all over it, dented to hell underneath, all the way from the lower window all the way down to the sill! not to mention the rust.
i can get a good donor shell i can cut apart, but im still waiting on the lad breaking the rest of it (been waiting near 2 months now -.- )
getting fed up as i have been at the body/engine from may this year!

right im collecting my donor glass roof SiR shell on Saturday.
pretty much rot free but was a front ender (dont need any front body pannels anymore lol) plus the glass roof is still on there.
will get some pics up then and start drilling all the spot welds off it , im tempted to drill the majority of the sills off and remove it as one entire peice, then just replace my full quarters and sills in one do.
going to buy a spot welder to.
you dont requite welding masks/goggles with spot welders do you?

You sure do, with any welding the proper safety equipment is needed. I've heard welders eye hurts horribly for weeks! Don't risk your eyes.
BTW the traditional spot welders you buy retail for the DIY'er aren't going to fit into most of the areas requiring welds.
I use a lincoln wire type welder with autofeed flux cored wire. Does good for home jobs.
If you've never welded, welding thin sheet metal like quarter panels is not the type of work to experiment with in my opinion. The thinner the material the easier to burn through and leave nasty holes.

na the spot welder will fit all the way around the door shuts, rear window and lower sill and the roof section. (already measured it all lol
) loads of room.
only place that will be a problem is the wheel arch to inner wheel arch as its pretty tight, but then again that's probably rotten to lol

i got an autobody repair diploma from my cc. I would say during reassembly use some type of panel bonding adhesive/weld bond adhesive in the hard to get to areas like the wheel arch, but you still need some welds around the panel. I replaced the quarter on a 05 Pontiac G6 four door, everything lined up right too. We used a $20,000 squeeze type resistance spot welder, and a Pro-spot MIG wire feed welder (my favorite).
btw, we watched videos of a lumina being rear-ended and then repaired with adhesive rear-ended again. The results were very similar and the adhesive is a approved repair if done properly (ex.must grind metal bare). If you don't have a lot of experience doing body work start by the book, and look at videos on youtube (a lot to learn from).
btw, give us some PICTURES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

had to carry it on/off the trailer
(what a pita)
good news is it made the journey ok, bad news is i has to be GONE monday!!
my bro left me the keys to his workshop so i need to go up there first thing, open it, and get on with getting it down into bits.
so glass roof out (putting the windscreen through and cutting the A pillars)
and removing the roof section out ON its metal frame, im not chesse stringing it out because there is a good chance i might crack it!
both rear quarters cut off, including the inner arches AND the sills, there so mint and rot free its a crime not to use them!
rear bronze quarter glass is getting removed and sold cant buy bronze glass here in the uk) and its worth alot on the second hand market.
already got a buyer for the roof :D so basically i got all the bits i need for free lol!!

thats to cheap that why lol. quality work does not come cheap, nor do parts.

I just completed one side of my crx with a full Honda quarter. It does take a lot of time. Make sure you have a good spot weld remover. I cut half way up the trunk pillar (around the middle of the back window) and inside the upper door jam to remove it. I wanted to stay away from the roof line. I used 3m glue for most of it, but welded the rear section, near the back bumper, and the pillar that runs down the trunk area. Make sure you take the extra time to line up your body panels, door, bumper, trunk and taillights.. Good luck
thanks i paid £40 bux today for 5 spot weld drill bits.
im not gluing mine together, its going to be spot welded or plug welded all the way along as it is from the factory. might even stitch/seam weld the off bit for a little more strength
how many hours does it take to drill off the old panel? also what is the best way to seperate them after removing the spot welds?

I would say it takes a couple of hours to remove the spot welds. I used a flat chisel to seperate the panels. Take your time removing the spot welds, or you will go thrue both panels easly.
thanks.
got the glass roof on ebay to raise some welding funds, already snapped 5 bits of cheese wire trying to get the flapping side windows out
piece of crap, got none left so im going to pinch a serrated knife and try to get the rest of the rubber undone with that before the old woman comes back and finds her nice kitchen knife wedged in a car window lol! shame i need them out intact or i would jsut burn them out with a blowtortch or smash them lol

nightmare job.
broken one rear quarter window (lifted it out and it just went POP and ended up in about 9000 shards of glass
)
got a wee bit of rust where the pannels are glued on top of each other (should be an easy fix with a grinding disk) tempted to have them acid dipped then galvanised...and say [freak] you to rust forever lol!

yeah those rear windows will break easily, sucks!! It's a big job, and like a idiot I am doing both sides.
You wonder how auto body shops make money.
I got lucky and did not break either window.

its a shame that window went.
because its JDM bronze glass a lad in ireland was going to pay me £80 for it ($160 ish bux) gutted!
ya i appreciate why body shops were quoting me around £1500-2000 gbp for both quarters and painted, seems like a bargin after spending so many hours trying to seperate them lol.
most spot welds are easy to drill out, a few seem to be "smudged" and go all the way from the center across all 3 skins meaning i have to drill then hacksaw out the bits i cant get
found a guy that does a mobile welding outfit, he does mainly classic cars and had a really good website. (he drives to your house, and works on the car out of the rear of his van etc) carrys all his own welding and cutting gear etc. which is a bonus as i am pretty crap at welding, it still needs some fab work and tbh its a job i only want doing once lol!
will give him a call and see how much he wants for both sides lol
