I just did a valve job on a '91 honda accord 2.2 litre. After putting everything together the car cranks over and sounds like it wants to start but won't. There is a smell of gasoline and a large quantity of black smoke comes out of the exhaust, yet it won't run.

Any ideas?

 

have you dbl checked the timing belt. have you checked the firing order ? is the check engine light on ? please provide any more info on what you have checked.

 

The timing is off.

 

When we put it together the marks on the camshaft were even with the top of the head, and the tdc mark was aligned with the notch in the little window by the flywheel.

I put a scratch on the distributor before removing it and reinstalled it in the same place.

The check engine light is off also.


EDIT: We re-checked the timing and it did seem to be off, but when we set it up again it has the same problem and the timing stays.

and the firing order is correct ? recheck the plug wires to make sure they are on the correct locations

According to the Chilton manual the order is right.
1-3-4-2? The wires are going to the right cylinders (again according to Chilton and also the way that the wires naturally come into place).It would sure be nice if it were something that simple.

When it was apart, I cleaned the fuel injectors with an ultrasonic cleaner. Is it possible that that damaged them in a way that causes them to flow excess fuel? Would that even show the same symptoms?

Alright here's a list of everything we've re-checked now:

Cam timing
Firing order
Fuel Pump
Compression
Spark plugs firing
Checked fuel injector resistors
Measured the resistance of the fuel injector solenoids
Checked thoroughly for loose hoses & lines
We've also disassembled the distributor and checked primary and secondary sides of the coil.

And after all that, it still won't start.

More or less the only thing that we haven't checked thoroughly is the fuel injector.

It turns for a long time before starting, but as soon as it starts it dies. We did the valve job because the exhaust valves on the third cylinder were dead and thus the cylinder wasn't firing. This problem with starting didn't exist before we took it apart.

Any additional help?

@AccordEX1991: None of them are missing, they all work just fine.

 

Replaced the fuel injectors and still have the same problem. It seems to be flooding the engine.

 

Here is what I think you have done.

When the timing was off you fouled out the plugs.

Make sure you have everything correct and install a new set of plugs.
