Should My Oil Pump Gear Look Like This??
so im rebuilding a b16 and the oil pump gears are really rough and jagged on the surface where the two pieces come together. the highlighted area. will this be a problem for it pumping oil? i would think these surfaces would be machined smooth but i havnt seen another honda b-series oil pump gear in person.

very true, but for $100 brand new (if i remember correctly) u cant go wrong

Think this is anything to lose sleep over? I could knock all of it off w/ some 2000 grit... Radial clearances are .003" to .004" all around and axial is right at .001" (all within brand new tolerance), so there's no other good reason to replace it. '00 b20z2:

I agree with the get a new one approach. Your rebuilding a motor and an perfect working oil pump is essential to the survival of that motor. Why take the risk, theyre about 100 bux and easy to put in while everythings apart. Thats like building a human and re-using a heart youre not sure about. Dont take any chances with oil flow.
I understand where you're coming from on the insurance angle. 98% came off with a bit of #0000 steel wool though since the pic was taken, and the pump measures out as good as brand new otherwise. The pitting is almost non-existent, I looked at it under 20x magnification, and I'm mostly just wondering if anyone here has seen something that small leading to galling later on.
I'm all for spending money where necessary, but if its good to go, $100 is quite a big chunk of change that could be better used elsewhere.

Pretty sure that finish is normal. The oil pump gears are powdered metal and the stripes you see if from the "coining" process.
But if I were you I'd buy another one since you have doubts.

It's within spec and the finish is good....... why so many doubters? It's only $100 for a new one...can someone post a picture of a new one showing that it has a better surface finish? Specs are good only other thing would be to have it crack tested....... However if you are going to take it that far you might as well buy a warrantied pump for $100.
I was more concerned about the two spots on the inner rotor. They came out w/ some #0000 steel wool. Talked to my friend at the machine shop, he said its good to go as long as that pit polished out.
That finish is normal as said above. If everything is within spec just use it. Ive reused them many times without a problem. You might as well port the passages while you have it apart.
Thought about doing that, just gonna let it ride though. Its going on a stock rebuilt b20z, no vtec.
Thank you everyone for your input. I always value a good discussion and as many "whys" as I can get.
