What is the proper approach to disconnecting the thermostat case (housing) from the water pipe under the intake manifold that leads to the water pump?

I saw a TouringAccord post that said this pipe is metal and probably wouldn't move much. And the Head Gasket FAQ mentioned there was no problem disconnecting it. But I didn't see anything else that explained how to disconnect it.

I'm kind of working blind as to what the connection looks like and would like to know what the right approach is. Anybody help?

 

Remove the bolts from the thermostat housing. Then twist & pull the housing away from the intake manifold. The tube will disconnect from the thermostat housing. The tube is only kept in place by one bolt (Part 16 in your image) on the back of the block. Other than that one bolt there are only two O-rings (part 19 in your image) holding the tube in place. The O-ring is a tight fitting seal so it may take a bit of force to pull it away.
