Mechanic says crank bolt came loose, pulley came loose, keyway and crank damaged beyond repair. Says it is not uncommon. His least expensive solution was to replace engine (rather than rebuild). Any other options? Rebuild - where can I find the parts?
my old lx did the same ****...
this is what I did... I bought another crank pulley and key... filled the chipped part of the crank with jbweld and put the pulley back on. This held and worked great for a year. Up until I started running the AC... then it broke again.
If you just need this car to get you somewhere I would try it... If you want to make it a "race car" then I would just swap in a z6 or d15b SOHC. Or even better move up to a b series.

He's right, its not uncommon. The crank bolt will back out on its own sometimes, unless your actually trying to remove it and then it wont budge. I've seen people weld up the end of the crank, grind it down and put on a new harmonic balancer before. you could replace the crank too. but honestly if you're paying a mechanic it usually is cheaper to just replace the engine. If you were closer i'd give you a crankshaft and a harmonic balancer, i've got 3 D15B7s in a corner of my garage waiting to be stripped for scrap aluminum, all have good cranks though.

Small world. Just found out someone I know had the same thing happen and he had to get a used engine from Texas. None local because they seem to be popular for racing or such.
I haven't yet seen the damage myself. May be tempted to do the weld thing and get by.
Sad part is I just had a rebuilt a/c compressor put in.
I will let you know about purchase of the crank. I am capable of a rebuild. Just never looked for Honda parts.
