Default DOHC ZC fails emissions...

91 Sedan, DOHC ZC swap, PG7 ECU... Runs great, burns a little oil, new o2 sensor. I took it in for emissions, here are the test results:

HC (PPM):
Cruise Limit...180
Cruise Emissions...193
Idle Limit...220
Idle Emissions...226

CO (%):
Cruise Limit...1.3
Cruise Emissions...2.97
Idle Limit...1.2
Idle Emissions...0.38

Failed HC at cruise and idle, and failed CO at cruise only.
Also my CO+CO2% at cruise was 16.17 and at idle was 14.58, O2% at cruise 0.45 and at idle 1.39...

I've already replaced the o2 sensor, could my tps be out of adjustment? Why else would it run so rich? Catalytic converter?

Try changing back to the pm6 for the test.

our cars are like 15 years old, and before we got them, they probably were never maintained rite.
I've owned 2 crx's. It's always the 15 year old cat and muffler that need changing

If ur running the pg7, no cat, out of timing ur guaranteed to fail emissions. put in a pm6 it has leaner fuel maps get your timing accurate use a cat, i would recommend a denso o2 sensor since that is a honda part. alot of the general sensors run real rich. i would also do a tune up and oil change right before ur smog inspection.

yea i was thinking of putting a pm6 in there to lean it out a little, and yea it has the original stock cat and muffler, theres no leaks but it is 17 years old so the cat could probably be replaced...the o2 i put in it was an used oe honda sensor, but i know it was good it came out of my buddys hatch.. I dont know if this would be related to emissions but I think my tps might be out of adjustment i haven't tested it yet but at full throttle sometimes it will bog out for a second, i've already done a tune up replaced plugs/wires/cap/rotor/ignitor/fuel filter... would a bad cat cause me to fail both hc and co?

Thats weird, tps sensors rarely need to be adjusted, which is why they are usually just riveted on the throttle body.

well mine is screwed and not rivited to the throttle body so i know its not the original tps... i'll have to borrow a volt meter to test it... i believe its supposed to be .45 at idle and 4.5 at WOT is that correct?

I live in Alaska and it looks like we have the same limits as you have listed... I passed a dohc zc w/pg7 ecu, gutted cat and no muffler... failed the first time, pour in a bottle of Heet (yellow bottle) and passed with flying colors. People call BS on this everytime I mention it, but it ALWAYS works for me. I just used a full bottle on a 1/4 tank of reg gas in a stock dx sedan with 238k and it barely registered on the tests. Try it, it costs .99c a bottle. If one bottle don't work, put in another.

yea a friend of mine suggested throwing in a few bottles of that cheap octane booster on a quarter tank of 92 octane gas and retard the timing a little bit and i should be good.. i got a new cat and exhaust today (used but supposedly good, i guess i'll find out)... now the kid i bought the car from told me today that he thinks he set the tps at .5 and 5.0 cuz that was the closest he could get it (sh*tty multi meter i guess) would that be enough to fail emissions?

As stated above, it's your ECU. New cat would definitely help but it's your ECU that's making your car run rich. I'm from CA and you know we don't get any breaks when it comes to smog. Mine barely squeaked by on a PG7 and I mean just barely (at the max limit for 15 mph test to be exact). Later I switched to a PM6 ECU and passed with room to spare.

hc and co are what the cat helps elimintate. so yeah, slap a new cat in there and you'll be fine. if your cats original then yeah its definately the problem.
