What is a ecu?

Electronic Control Unit.

 

what does it do/manage? does every car have one?, can it be upgrades for better performance?

manages fuel/air ratio, rev limit, cold idle rpms, normal rpms , controls your automatic transmission(if you have one), checks various sensors throughout your car like the oxygen and cat sensor, controls emissions

 

but can it be upgrades for better performance, and every car has one correct?

it can be upgraded for better performance although with Honda's you never get much. The only advantage to moding your ecu is that you can change rev limits, remove fuel cutoffs, change VTEC engagment points etc. Althoug other makes of cars benifit more from the updated fuel/air mixtures.

 

especially turboed audis and vw's

Actually, and automatic tranny has its own ECU totally seperate from the main ECU.

All new cars have an ECU. Most cars before the mid 80's dont have one.

 

just buy a aftermarket ecu in stead of upgrading your factory one.
