Rod/bearing thrown in my GSR today :(
My oil light comes on, I pull over, check the oil.... add oil because my dipstick was giving me a sketch reading. A ratting sound starts... increases in frequency, I could feel it through the gas pedal. I was about 3-5 minutes from my local race shop so I put on the hazard lights and went slow as hell over there. When I arrived I was reassured by the owner that my intuition was correct and there was probably a serious issue with my bottom end -- probably a thrown rod or bearing.
So we start talking options, and I'm traumatized because this is alot of money that I really dont need to be spending right now. But realistically I need to think about it pricewise vs motor effectiveness and reliability.
I came out with the idea of doing a b20/vtec. The torque is good. I know the walls are thin, but I'm only wanting to push it into the 200whp area. Thoughts, opinions, suggestions, etc, all are wanted.
oh yeah this is
/end vent

RIP GSR

i would def check the damage first, even though from the way you said it, it sure sounds like a bearing but i would check, b20vtec would be sweet and pretty affordale i think hmotorsonline is selling b20 long blocks for like 500 give or take a few but good deal i think.
why not just get a new crank and rod assy. hell if you are really trying to save money then just pull it out have it cut and micropolished and use oversized bearings.
Thats a spun bearing, if it was a thrown rod, I would have seen a nice window-in-the-block pic
Sucks, but not crazy bad, like what was said before, ls/v or just get the crank micropolished, good luck

X2, If it were me I think i'd try a new crank rod and main bearings and new connecting rods. Or a long block and sell the old head.

just take it apart and have the crank checked then go from there maybe you can save your crank. thats what i did but my bearing wasnt too bad. take that **** to a machine shop and they will check her out.
It'd be easy if I had worked on a block before but I haven't
And the part of town it spun a bearing is pretty isolated, so a drive anywhere would be no good at all. Luckily it was right near Trackmasters though. They know whats up when it comes to hybrid builds. They have a b20 on the way right now. They'll use the head from my GSR. Afterwards I'll tinker with my F'd up GSR block and learn a thing or two
I'll be buying a hytech replica header for it

I cant afford to sleeve it right now, I'm a working college student on a budget. Maybe hondas will be a vicious cycle and I'll get the busted b18c sleeved, swapped back in and boosted... and take the old b20 block and do just that, 2.2 all motor

Pull the oil pan, replace the rod bearings (and the mains while you're at it), replace the rod or have it checked for out-of-round and put 'er all back together. You dont have to pull the motor if you do it right...
