Default How to for n00bs: Gain 20whp for less than $30

Alright, there's a bit of a backstory to this tale...

A couple days ago, we had a customer tow his car to our shop (Innovative MotorWorks) in order for us to finish the install of a Skunk2 Pro Series manifold, BLOX throttle body, and a couple other little things, as the car had a set of DIY ITB's on it beforehand, and the wiring was "questionable." The car was an EG hatch painted a beautiful shade of orange, and featured a 98+ JDM ITR with Blox Tuner 1's, OEM 4-1 header, 2.5" exhaust, and the newly installed Skunk2 Pro Series manifold and BLOX 70mm throttle body.

So, after everything was corrected in the wiring, the manifold and throttle body combo installation was completed, and the car was bolted up the the DynaPack for the tuning portion.

By the time we had gotten through a couple pulls through the entire rev range, John (J-K-Tuning.com) and I both kinda' thought the numbers were low for the setup. The car was making 160~whp consistently, while your average bolt-on tuned JDM ITR makes anywhere between 175-185whp, depending on the exact choices of bolt-ons and such.

So, as I was on the phone with another customer, John came out front to our showroom and walked around in front of me with the biggest grin on his face. He said "Come back here, I want your opinion. Just to make sure I'm not completely retarded."

I follow him back to the garage, and walk to the car on the dyno. "Check the oil," John says. I do so, and find the oil level an inch and a half over the top line, right after the car was just run and shut off.

So, the car gets jacked up, John pulls the drain plug and drains nearly six quarts of oil out of the crankcase.

John drove to Target (which is basically across the street from our shop) and picked up four quarts of 10w30, and proceeded to fill the crankcase with the proper oil capacity.

Sixteen minutes after the last 160~whp pull, the car was filled with oil, warmed up, and made a 183whp pull.

Here's the graphs. Dotted is 6 quarts, solid is 4 quarts.

Goes to show you should:

A.) Fill your crankcase with the manufacturer-recommended oil capacity, no more, no less.
B.) Notify your tuner you are a newb and he/she may want to check over EVERYTHING before putting your car on the dyno.

I wanted to smack this kid silly.

Wow, unfortunately this happens a lot.

But, I'm glad you guys were able to diagnose the problem before the customer blew the motor.

ive had the same **** happen here.. previously tuned a customers car..healthy 1.8 that put down 205hp... he changes the intake, header, and a few minor things 2 weeks down the road. we throw it back on the dyno and its making 179-182hp.. im like wtf is going on... sure enought he must have had 8 quarts in the motor...drain it..get it to 4 quarts and the car ended up making 210hp

ive also done a back to back test with 10-30 and 20-15 on a stock type r motor... 20-50 lost 15 hp...lol

it was an h22 with the h23 manual tensioner conversion, which makes the belt almsot too tight w/o putting any tension on it.. they used a coathanger i think,,

So, less oil = more horsepower? Sweet! I can’t wait till I get home and find that drain plug! Thanks D-Rob!
