Default Automatic transmission fluid Change question?

I have a 98 civic hatchback and i looked in the owners manual and it states 2.9qt-change and 6.2-total. I have never changed the tranny fluid myself so im going to give it a shot since i change my oil regularly figured it can't be too hard.

My only question is how to do a full flush? or should i just change it once with the 2.9qt and call it a day. I don't beat on the car its just a commuter.

thanks

2.9 is drain and fill capacity.

The 6.2 is if it were completely dry(lines, torque converter, etc).

Only way to properly do a "flush" is to hook the lines up to a flush machine(spendy). If you are not having problems, a simple drain and fill is just fine. You do not get all of the fluid out, that's why routine maintenance is key to getting the longest life from your Honda AT.

You can also perform a triple flush.

1. Drain and fill trans.
2. Run front wheels off the ground in D at 30-40 mph for a few minutes.
3. Repeat for twice(use 9 quarts total).

Great thanks for the quick response. I will take your advice and do a simple flush and if its really bad ill do a triple flush...

One question though do i need to stick with the Honda ATF or can i get what they have at Pepboys ?

thanks

Honda ATFZ1 for sure.

Honda transmissions are different than most manufacturers and require a specific fluid.
