Can a low ECT gauge pointer be caused from a previous overheating ?
Vehicle: 1994, Accord Ex, VTEC, AT
A lady I spoke to who owns a Honda Civic said her car overheated one time sending the temp gauge pointer to the top H mark. She said the temp gauge pointer never went back to the middle after that happened, even though the overheating problem was fixed. Perhaps it throws the calibration of the gauge off.
The former owner of my vehicle, told me the car had overheated, at least one time. So, it is either off calibration, or it is an engine temperature issue. I am having the same problem with a slightly low pointer, but reading thru the archives I see that several Accord owners have said this is normal - meaning that is what their gauge is doing. I wonder if they were the original owners or if they purchased vehicles that overheated and this undoing of the gauge calibration is what has happened without them knowing that?
I have pushed tool gauges past their max psi before and then the zero psi becomes higher, the pointer now higher. Especially on cheap gauges. note that Helms warns you when you do the test for the ECT Sending unit, not to allow the gauge to hit the top H mark or it can damage the gauge. Luckily I was able to Ign turn the key off before my pointer went to the H mark. But as I said, it overheated before and maybe that was in effect the same result that Helms is warning you about. Thoughts?

Yeah there was a post like 2 days ago similar issue. They had to replace their gauge because the needle touched the H and got damaged. Those gauges are expensive. Maybe someone else could provide better input.

Thank you for the info. I dont read all the posts, so I wouldn't know about it. But it is good to know that it is a possibie explanation, because knowing that it is likely that it is off calibration, I can now recalibrate it myself. In other words, I'll just figure that my new middle is slightly lower now. There may be other explanations as well, but it will take some time to narrow it down. I was wondering if a low temp T-stat might cause that. Most people say the stat should not change the pointer position.
