98 Civic - Speedometer not working; check engine light on - NEED HELP pls.
98 Civic - Speedometer dead; check engine light is on.
started a few months back ....speed sensor has been replaced in addition to the alternator, new fuses and a lot of labor time charged..800.$!!!
it was ok for a month or so...then back to the exact same problem and the car has left me stranded but was able to boost in time to get it to the garage...
more new fuses...this week same problem....new mechanic we asked to go easy on us due to costs as we have spend a lot with same problem.. ran some schematics, saw nothing funny with the wires around the harness put 14v fuses in and it is running but we are expecting it to die anytime now...
Please help. we have read a lot of posts which indicate this may be just a short somewhere i.e. corrosion or a wire rubbing where it shouldn't ...
we are not car people and would appreciate any advise .. Thank-you.

Damm you should have joined HT before spending all that $. You could have just gave it to me.LoL
But anyway to answer you= Honda TSB 99-029 is wha you are looking for. I can bet on that. Google it up you should find a PDF for it. I couldn't get it for you cuz im on my Sidekick Lx and im limited to what files I can view. But believe me google it and try that fix and hit us back with the results. G/L

Dear 'mortificationrock'
Sorry we are not getting back to you until now.
That night we printed off the PDF details as you suggested and worked away at the car ourselves (with the help of my father in law)
Needless to say the regular 7.5 fuse is holding up, the speedometer is working and the next day the check engine light went off.
You are a life saver; we really appreaciate your help and we will be sure to be using these forum's again in the future.
All the best to you!
