I've just been thinking how much nicer it would have been if Honda had given the S2000 a cruising 6th instead of still a pretty low one...

Is there any way to have a 'taller' set of cogs made to replace the factory 6th gear? it just sucks that the S in 6th is still at higher RPM (about 4500rpm at 80mph) than my Prelude's 91 trans in 5th...which I thought was pretty high (4000rpm at 80mph)

 

It will cost a lot of money for no return in economy.

How would lower freeway RPMs not increase fuel economy?

 

More throttle to keep it moving.

stock Z6 trans in my car (.702 5th) = 35mpg
Y8 trans with 1.000 5th = 43mpg

Same final drive in both trannys. Both of those were on 800+ mile road trips at 80mph with a couple hundred pounds of parts in the car.

well that's assuming you need X amount of throttle... I'm positive that it's got enough torque a little lower to maintain the same cruising speed without needing to be screaming at 4500rpm...

With the Prelude at least, it's been proven as several people threw in some Accord 5th gears and noticed a pretty good freeway mileage increase.

You're still cruising around 1/2 of the RPM at redline, which is what most ANY car should do! It's not too low so you're constantly giving it throttle, and it's not so high that it's sucking down the gas.

My B16 with 4.928 final drive gets 40 mpg on the freeway in a 95 Civic Si full interior

I get about 24mpg freeway...bone stock car

 

Wasn't built for mileage though!

Watch that right foot, run 38 psi in your tires, keep the top up...and you shouldn't be too bad...it's only a 2 litre

yea that's what sucks... I've been running the stock 32psi since i bought it May 2007.... my Prelude is also a 2.0 and with it's original trans it was getting 30+ highway. Oh well... guess I'll just dump some cash and try lowering 6th a little

 

ok I did some researching and this what I have found.

My 6th gear is 0.811, while the AP2 comes with a 0.76 6th gear. I'm going to try and swap them.

I'm under the impression that it should be fine since I'm only in 6th for the freeway (where I'm never below 65, usually commute at 80mph) because torque is almost completely flat from 3200-6000 (VTEC engagement). This should mean that it'll be fine to drop 6th gear revs a bit yes?

Again right now 80mph is roughly 4500rpm. Here's a dyno of a stock AP1:

 

i get 42 MPG in my stock 95 lx 4 door civic.
