ATS Final Drive Questions
Well as the topic states, YES I have read ALL accounts on the ATS final drive and done a search. I have read them over and over. I still have a couple questions and am hesitant to buy it. What kind of gas mileage are you guys getting with the FD? Since the ATS FD increases the rotations by about 10%, what kind of strain will this put on the engine in the long run? How much does it cost to install this sucka (My friends nor I feel capable of handling such a task by ourselves)? I guess this is objective and relative, but isn't it kind of a pain daily driving the car with the ATS since it tachs so high?
I am trying to justify in my mind that it is worth the price and worth it for my application, which is mostly daily driven, not a lot of highway driving. The car sees the track every month, once or twice. I have until Friday, which is when R&D stops there GB(plus i can get an awesome price with the credit of my toda cam gears which i won in the poetry contest!). Thanks for the help guys...

Here is another question from somone considering the ATS.
Does the Odometer ignore the FD and calculate proper mileage? I assume the mileage is calculate from the input shafts?
Has anyone drive the JDM and the ATS in R's? Can someone tell me it is wirth $300 more? Is anyone using a GSR 5th gear with an ATS?

speedo works off of the side of the diff.... FD installs do not change speedo readings.
$300 is a lot of money... if I were to do it I would save up and do it right.
GSR 5th is a bad thing.... unless your kaa is a comuter *****. For track use the stock ITR (USDM) gear ratios are just about as good as it gets... (unless you get teh ATS gear set).

-who would like get the gear set instead of the FD...

on the street I avg. 30-31... the ~500-600rpm increase may not change the ecomony 'that' much... maybe 1-2 mpg?

Anyone taken a trip since they had the ATS with R 5th? How bad was a 6-8 hour trip?
What kind of gas mileage are you guys getting with the FD?

Honestly? Yes, you lose some gas mileage, this I noticed the first week that I had it. Not much but, it was noticeable for sure.
Let's be truthful here though, gas mileage is Not really the most important thing to be considerding with the ITR itself or adding ANY Go Faster mods, IE: Final Drive, Hot Cams, Etc.

How much does it cost to install this sucka (My friends nor I feel capable of handling such a task by ourselves)?

Mine was $400. done by a reputible race shop that has done them before.

No it is Not a pain, It makes the car nicer to drive actually. Ultimately the decision is Yours but, in reality, it is only 500 or so RPM higher in each gear wich is NOT a Big Deal, and the return in performance is well worth it in my books and many that have it. I suggest a lighter flywheel as well.
Good luck, in your decisionmaking It may seem like a Big step now and a bunch of money but, dollar for dollar, well You know...

I haven't either but, I certainly drove a car with the ATS BEFORE I decided to do it.
There are a few more here on the board that have the JDM final and another member that has the ATS AND GSR 5th.
But, most all of these questions have already been answered on older posts."No I'm not trying to be a Dick, I just remember all the debates especially when I was getting ready to buy mine."
Alot of people have done the ATS and thus far I have Not heard Any negative comments. I couldn't possible think of going back stock or even to the JDM. It is that worth it to me at least.
As for a longer road trip? 6-8 hours or more... I wouldn't turn it down but, would not really go looking for a long road trip like this. Mostly because when I decided to go for a more track inpspired car, I also acquired a daily driver for longer comfortable trips and foul weather driving.
As an aside, I drove my PY from CT to FLA when it was bone stock! Guess what? That trip sucked BallZ! It was very uncomfortable even though I had done it several times before with different cars and one being my older LS/Teg. The R is just Not really a long road trip car IMHO. I love it but, don't plan on driving it longer than a few hours at best.

JDM FD + light fly makes the car just about perfect.
ATS makes the car just plain rip.
if i had the extra $400 at the time, ATS probably would have been my choice.
Everything is a compromise.
D - who's really sick of the same ******* questions about FD's.

AssDime drove to MI and back with it. 26-28mpg @ 80-110mph throughout. THe longest drive at a single time was Lexington, KY to West boca (south florida). He only bitched about his A/C breaking eventually

Craig - Who squezzed a 825mm belt on there cause he did not want to go back to the store
