Default Final Drive Install Help

I am posting here becuase its an ITR tranny and alot of you ITR guys have swapped in JDM or ATS final drive in to your cars, and some have done the work themselves. Well i got the JDM fd, thanks to ChrisJ who had it for a great price, and ready to ship.

Anyways I have a few questions about putting the countershaft back together. Do I need to use the thrust shim that was at the bottom of the USDM countershaft on the new JDM one? It seems to big to use on the JDM countershaft.

I put it back together with out the shim and put the countershaft and mainshaft in the tranny. The gears didnt spin too easily. So I disassembled the whole countershaft. I guess i didnt press the gears on good enough. Everything seemed to line up good tho. The gears should spin easily, right?

I am gonna reassemble it tomorrow morning, should i use the shim?

Thanks

You do not reuse.

They won't spin that easily. Especially if the countershaft isn't perfectly straight (it can wobble with the case off. Before you hondabond it back together torque the case down to spec and rotate the input shaft by hand. It should turn with not too much force and the rotational inertia should let it spin just a little after you stop turning and let go. Make sure you bolt the casing down to spec though to make sure everything is seated properly.

Check to see that the force required to turn the input shaft with the case off is the same as with the case torqued down. If not something isn't right.

I am gonna reassemble it tomorrow morning, should i use the shim?
No.

Thanks

Thanks for the help. You seemed to sum it up pretty nicely.

I also have one more question. I am replacing the bearing in the picture below. Number 17. In the helms it shows a special gear puller to get it off. I dotn have that, so i was thinking of goin to the dealer to get it done, I have to go there to get some hondabond anyway. What do ya think they will charge and how long will it take.

You can get "hondabond" at your local autoparts store. It's called "Permatex Ultra Grey" liquid gasket maker...look on the back of the package and it should list the hondabond part number (which means it is a straight substitute for it).

It's half the price of what any dealer would charge.

The bearing had a small dent on it, and it was causing a loud clicking noise. I have no clue how it got dented. Maybee peices from when the old countershaft broke.

I think you might have to reshim your diff if you replace that bearing. Not possitive.

Well, I put the tranny back together today. Everything went smooth and fine. The trans shifts nicely and the FD is awsome.

You dont always have to reshim it, just check its clearance. did the dealer charge you much to swap that bearing? I would have done it for a soda and a candy bar.
Maybe thats why I am so fat.
