Default speedometer not working......

I have been having this problem for a while now. my speedo goes from zero to all the way around to the other side of zero, sometimes it jumps to 80 then back to the other side of zero when i gas it.

I was wondering if its the gauge cluster thats doing it??? or is it the speed sensor? how do i check this??? and if it is the sensor, do i change the whole thing including the gear for the speed sensor?? thanks guys for reading

First thing you should check is the wiring leading to the speed sensor.. Make sure it's not corroded. I had this same problem.. I bought a new speed sensor, installed and problem continued.. so, I put the old speed sensor back in.. Then i got new wiring for the speed sensor and the problem went away.

you should be able to go to a junkyard and cut the plug of of any civic/integra. it shouldnt cost you more than a few bucks. then just cut the old plug off of your harness and solder the 3 wires on making sure to get the colors right. this plug often goes bad because it seems whenever work is being done on the car that involves removing a coolant hose it always leaks right onto that plug.

haha, u are the man....i think this happened to me...my speedo tends to malfunction everyonce in a while....and today, i was adjusting FITV....and i noticed coolant around the speed sensor and on plug....didnt think that would be causing it, but now i will change that part of the hardness...thanx!

Well thats good, but so you dont buy a new sensor for nothing, back track the wires from the sensor plug to the main harness, make sure nothing is wrong with them. And if they come up clean as the plug, then i would go ahead and get the sensor...
