Default shaking in 3, 4, and 5 gear...

Ok guys i have a very strange problem! I have a shake in the three gears mentioned however it is only in those gears, only under acceleration, and only higher in the rpm band. If anyone has any suggestions that would be fantastic. I did search to find people saying change the axles, but i would rather not spend 200 bones for no reason. If anyone has experienced this problem please enlighten me on a good way to check and see if it is the axles before i go buy new ones. Like is there usually a lot of play in the axle, or does it seem fine but something inside is f'd? I got under the car and the axles feel like they are in the tranny solid, and dont feel like there is enough play when i wiggle it side to side to cause the vibration i am experienceing. Thanks for your help guys!

for me i had something similar but for me it was that the axle was put back together wrong or maybe something had popped off. the outter part of the axle (wheel-side) wasn't seating correctly and had a knotch in it if u tried to rotate it. i took the CV boot off and put everything together and that fixed it right up. dunno how well i described it as im unfamiliar with the terms for axle parts

Sounds like axles to me...you might try to remove/rebuild/replace them if you don't want to spend a lot of $$$, but that would be a lot of your time.

I'm having the EXACT same problem that you are. I got so pissed that I replaced an outer tie rod arm, 2 upper control arms/ball joints, an axle boot, a lower ball joint, put in Energy Suspension poly sway bar endlinks and poly sway bar bushings, and I ordered a tanabe front under brace. Hopefully all of these things together will reduce the vibrations although im pretty sure that the axles are the issue seeing as the previous owner of my car created a thread on here like 5 miles back describing the same symptoms and getting rebuilt axles fixed his/my car. So now Im waiting for skunk2 to sent me new rubber upper spring isolaters ( another think that I fount to be f*cked up), then I'll slap that underbrace on and take her for an allignment and let you know how it goes if you'de like

its a 93 and all the joints were torn and had road debris inside of them so I really dindn't mind it too much seeing as it would have needed to be done eventually

Ok, well is there anyway to tell if the axle is the culprit before actually replacing them? I guess not if it is somethine in the "joint" of the axle i wouldn't know until i tore it apart. But anyway these are the things ive checked so far.

I thought it was a vacuum problem, so i checked all my hoses and no leaks. Then i thought it might be the EGR system, so i cleaned the ports adn valve. while i was at it i cleaned the vtec solenoid and IACV. I checked the wheel bearings and there is no play in the hub, and i also looked at the axles and wiggled them around and they felt snug. But if the problem is normal to feel the shaking and there not be a visible problem with the axles i will replace them and see what happens.

Thanks for the replies guys!

Thats the first thing that came to my mind. Is it only under acceleration? Sounds like a vaccum problem thats causing the car to go rich and bog in those high load situations.

Yes it is only under acceleration, and only noticeable in the gears mentioned. I just ordered some axles, Im also going to order some new wheel bearings and while i have it apart im going to have my SPC front camber kits installed. So this will take me a little bit to get done, but as soon as i get the axles in and the bearings and camber kits installed ill let you guys know if the problem goes away.

$100 it's your axles.

you can order BRAND NEW ones from Automotivepartswarehouse.com and not worry about getting a bum reman and having to exchange cores...

Ok well i have brand new axles sitting in my garage, im just waiting on the wheel bearings to come in so i can tear the suspension apart, and have the bearings, SPC camber kits, axles, and SS brake lines all done in one shot! maybe even do new pads and rotors depending on my budget but we will see!!

If its not my axles just paypal me the $100 hehe

if you want to try one thing you can try this...take axle out of half shaft and watch for rust coming out of it. regardless of that you can fill the half shaft with wheel bearing grease and see if it goes away, at least a little bit. that is the only thing i can think of.
