I just replaced the head gasket and valve cover/spark plug gaskets yesterday. Now all 4 plugs have oil all over the threads.

Whats confusing me is that there is no oil on the top of the plug, none on the plug wires, and theres no oil around the spark plug grommets/gaskets, and none in the spark plug "cylinders". Also the compression test #'s are:

#1 228
#2 231
#3 236
#4 240

Is there anything else that could be causing this? Any input, comments, suggestions, or questions would be appreciated. Thanks

 

Was there oil on the plug threads before you replaced the valve cover gasket and tube seal grommets?

 

no, i cleaned the plugs before i changed everything. or do you mean was it a previous problem? then yes, it was a problem, among other things that made me replace everything.

When you installed the new tube seal grommets, did you use a little bit of hondabond or ultragrey permatex?

no, i didnt. from reading all over honda-tech i have heard that you should only use the sealant stuff on the corners of the cam caps. i guess i will try it on the tube seals.

but do you know why there isnt any sign of oil ANYWHERE besides the threads. thanks for the input so far.

 

 

Just replace the tube seals and see what happens! That should fix your problems!!

There is this thing called gravity that causes the oil to flow to the lowest part of the tube, and what do you know, that's where the plug threads are.

 

Oh, no ****?!?! i didnt think gravity would work in the engine. for some reason i assumed the power of vtec would mess with it.

yea i guess gravity has a little something to do with it. i just wanted to figure out why it was so clean, like no residue or nothing. but i guess enough is enough. thanks for the replies.

I really hope your being sarcastic. Think about it, how long was the motor off before you inspected the plugs? When the oil is hot it will flow rather easily and quickly down the spark plug tube. And it will be pretty hard to see a thin layer of oil/residue on tube seals.

the motor will be off for less than a min before i check the plugs. there is no residue when i wipe it with a paper towel. but you are probably right, its prolly so thin that it just burns away or something. thanks for the help.
