The terms are often mis-used.

You will hear a lot of the following:
ALL '92-'95 Civics referred to as "EG's"
ALL '96-'00 Civics referred to as "EK's"

Sometimes you'll hear '99/'00 Civic Si's referred to as EM1's, they are.

Now the ones above (except for EM1) are just general bullshit categories to tell the generations, that a lot of people mis-use.

Then there's your EXACT chassis code.

Yours, if "davefromPA" is right (I didn't bother to look) is an EJ6. Mine is an EJ8. My old civic was an EJ1. Those are all "correct" chassis codes.

Though people often generalize it (over generalize it) into "shorthand" which is just urs is an "EK", mine is an "EK", and my old one is an "EG".

PS: Pre-92 ones are often referred to as "EF's" - but I'm pretty sure most of them actually used EF in the chassis code.

You're better off posting, if you need help, that you have a '99 Sedan, because "EK" is simply wrong, and when you start rattling off chassis codes it just confuses some people, and makes others have to actually go look up what in the **** it actually is.

That's perfect I was a little confused on this whole thing. I even looked at my VIN and saw EJ6.
So that's right.

Now, how do you install a cold air intake on mine?

Also - what's the process/required tools/money to lower a car?

 

hey jus to let you know the 88-91 civic are mostly EE and ED only the jdm ones are EF's... i know u dont really care probobly but doesnt hurt to learn suttin new

True that! n00bs *think* it sounds sooo cool, but...

Chassis codes only make sense if you drive a stocker!

For instance, my ride is half n' half, HX/Si, from the rims to the roof!

Doesn't make much sense to describe it as an EJ7/EM1...

Even if ppl look up the codes it won't tell them jack **** anyway, yes?

 

If you want to use a chassis code, just make sure you know what it means before you go calling your USDM hatchback an EG6 or an EK9.

And an engine swap does not change your chassis code. If anything, the above example would be an "EJ7 with a B16A2". Or just stick to calling it an HX with a B16A2 swap!

True! That was my point...

As far as the VIN (and my insurance company ) is concerned, I own an '98 EJ7/HX, but...

I tend to think of suspension components, brakes, et cetera, as being integral parts of the chassis.

If I went by my chassis code and ordered nothing but EJ7 parts, I'd have a hell of a mess on my hands!

Every time I buy something, I gotta think to myself, "Hrm, is that a HX, Si, Accord, Teg, or Prelude part?"

In my case, these chassis codes mean nothing - as well as a lot of other cars on this site!

"JDM terms" are just a attempt at posing - that's all...

If ppl want to use 'generic terms' they should stick to CX, DX, EX, GX, HX, LX, Si, VP...

 

Well, you could still go around saying, "Oh, it's just an HX..."

Chassis codes are an ID code for me. It can be relevant, but you don't really have to call it by the code anyway. Sometimes it might help if you have an "unknown" trim though. Other cars might have unfamiliar stock engines.

Chassis codes are by far a "JDM term". They're used throughout the world and I definitely don't use it for anything that's normally related to anything being JDM. Sure, JDM cars have chassis codes too, but I don't use them because I incorrectly think chassis codes are JDM.

For example, say I'm from Europe. I drive a Civic hatch and need some help with it. I have a couple mechanical issues, but I'd also like to modify the car to make it perform better.

In my country my car is called a Civic 1.6iES. I post about that and no one seems to know what it is. I think my car has VTEC, but I really don't know. I guess I thought maybe all Hondas had VTEC...

If I knew about the chassis code, which is either in my VIN or other similar ID number, and the engine code, which is stamped on the front of the block, I would already know what the US equivalent could be.

 

so not to thread jack or anything, but does this mean my car (88 dx civic from can.) is an ed6?
