whats so bad about salvage title cars?
a friend is looking to buy a 96 civic coupe, but has salvage title. he said he doesnt mind the title because he can fix honda's, will drive it for a while, and well, said that he is driving the car, not the title.
is it harder to get an inspection sticker (PA) or cost more for insurance or something like that? like what are the hurdles/things that make a salvage car bad
oh yea the car is selling for 1,000

Well, salvage titles can result from a totaled car or theft. If the car is branded because of theft it probably won't be too bad if the car was fixed and restored correctly. Now, in order for a car to be totaled is if the cost to repair the damage is greater than the value of the car. If it was salvaged recently (from an accident), damage might not be bad since the value of the car is low. If it was salvaged a while ago, damage could have been great.
I am not too sure how the insurance will be with a salvaged car.

the value of your car goes WAYYYYY down, kelly blue book and street price.....but if you don't ever plan on selling it, doesn't really matter
I dont know about your laws, but here if a vehicle is "salvaged" twice (we call it the 2nd total loss) then it can never be registered on the street again.
so I guess if the car already has a salvaged title you run the risk of never getting it back on the road if something happens to it.
of course you could always just switch VIN numbers there are people here who do that.

In PA it must have a reconstructed title to be inspected. any shop can tell you what needs to be done to get that title. it will be registered fine. call your insurance agent and tell him the vin. it will show salvage or reconstructed when they pull up the vin. should not be a problem getting insurance or regestered. only problem you will run into is it has to be throughly inspected to be considered reconstructed. if it already was reconstructed though its just like getting anyother used car. although worth much less. all depends on when the salvage was put on it. CARFAX the vin and find out when it was made salvage is your first step. go to the marketplace here and find someone who can do a CARFAX for a small donation of say a couple bucks for their time.

Lol switch the vins, isn't that illegal on HT?
i've had problems with insurance with one of my cars because of the title, and with my new insurance company i have to show them the car passed saftey inspection every year. ( Motor viechle inspections are 1 year here )

Well i know from personal experience about salvage titles, well because i have one and i live in PA. It's not a good idea to buy a car out of state that is salvage because PA will make you get the state inspection which they go over the car with a fine tooth comb (if its from out of state). But you just have to be careful with what you buy, go over the car more than you would with a normal titled car.
I would think a car with a salvage title will be deemed to be worth less. So it's easier for insurance to total again.
Call your insurance company and discuss it with them before you purchase anything though.
