Default 89 Civic Check Engine Light HELP!!!!

This started Sunday, after I start the car up and driving maybe 20-30 mph there is this sudden slight loss of engine power and click and then the check engine light comes on. It seems to do it sometimes and then not. When I am on the hwy crusing it does not come on. I bought the car used and the trans is a automatic and it shifts kind of hard sometimes depending hoe much i gas it. I do not dog the car because this is my only car to work. I noticed that today that the trans is downshifting rought which seems to be 3rd to 2nd. Also the lights and radio cut out when I push the brakes sometimes and sometimes when I hit a bump. Before I drop some cash that I do not have, can you guys help me out as to maybe what the problems are? I really need help and I am new to this site. Any info helps me out so much. Thanks everyone!

The light is not on, does it have to be on to have a code? I do not have a code checker. Is there any type of blinks I should pay attention to? It seems to be like once sometimes and then 2 times and sometimes 3 or possibly a combination of 1 and 2.....any thoughts?

Thanks for helping me!

if your are still obd0 go to the passenger side of the car and pull the carpet back from under the dask, this will reveal the ecu. there is a clear circle in the middle of the ecu, if it's flashing red when the keys are in the ignition in the on possition then you have codes. count the number of flashes, if there is a long break between flashes, start counting again, when you have all the codes (1 flash is code 1, 2 flash is code 2 etc...) go to google and search obd0 ecu trouble codes to find out what you've got

I just went and pulled the carpet back and I see the sight glass with the red LED in it. But no codes, no flash. I turned the key all the way without starting it. Any thoughts?

when your check engine light comes on, pull over do not shut car off and check the light on the computer.

1 fast blink means 1 and long flash means 10. so if it goes

flash flash flash thats code 3]
if it goes

flassssssssshhhhhh flash thats code 11

if it goes flaaaaaaaasssshh thats code 10.

get the code and report back.

for the rough shifting make sure your tranny fluid is full/new fluid.

The orange light in the dash was on not the red LED under the carpet of the passenger dash. IS it still the oxygen sensor? The light stayed on for a second or so. While this was happening there was a decrease in power of the engine. Also lately when I apply the brakes the radio cuts out and the lights flicker.....any thoughts?

go to your local automotive parts store tell them the problem your having. they will go out and look at it. it is an EF civic so you also have to think about the point of it could have alot of miles so it might be time to get the transmition rebuilt but check the transmition flewid first. if its not the flewids bring it to a shop and if its the transmition bring it to a TRANSMITION shop you trust.

If you turn on the key it will normally blink once. And why would you want a bunch of wanna be techs from some parts store to advise you about your problems? Most of them don't even know anything about old imports.
