Default CF Hood Refinishing?? PICS Inside.

I'm not an expert on cf hoods so i thought i'd get some imput on mine and see if i can fix it myself and not have to spend a bunch of money at a shop getting someone to fix it for me.

It looks as if my hoods starting to fade away or something...not exactly sure. Or maybe it's just the clear coat coming off and needs to be re-done..?

I took a few pics so hopefully you guys can tell me what's happening and how i can possibly fix it so it looks like new.

I'm trying to prevent buying a new hood or taking it into a shop..hopefully it's a somewhat easy fix.

Any help is appreciated, Thanks.

Just did mine the other day. Sanded it down with 2K grit and the releared it. Looked like yours before and it looks better than when it was new now. VERY easy to do if you know how to shoot clear. I also used PPG clear so I won't have this problem again. Pics will be posted tomorrow.

Edit: This is the only way to prevent it from coming back. I used the peanut butter trick, wetsanding and buffing but was never happy with the results.

The oil from PB is supposed to make it look new but only last for a week or so. Not worth the mess. Sand id down until the old clear is off. I used a DA sander so it din't take very long to do.

I have before pics but I will have to wait until the sun comes back out to take after pics. Your not gonna go past the clear so it won't harm the CF.

Take off the hood.

Use a sanding block (Block of wood even) or an orbital sander with 2000 grit wet/dry sand paper on it. Start in one corner of the hood and go side to side across the width of the hood while keeping it wet with a spray bottle until the rough spots on the gelcoat of the hood are smooth again.

Pretty much a CF hood is made with a very thick layer of boat gelcoat on top of the carbon weave and the material is not made to withstand the sun for long. You are just taking a small layer of this getcoat off.

As far as spraying it I don't know anything about that, we'll wait for Sneezin.
