Default b20z turbo swap in a 96+ civic

** I did a search and couldn't find my question answered **

1) Does the handling get thrown off cause of the weight of the motor ?

2) With the turbo set up, should the LS tranny be used or the GSR ?

3) Has anyone done this swap, and have pics ? also, if so could you please IM me i have some questions.

thanks in advance guys

I looked into to doing this swap so I can answer some questions:
1. No the engine is not that heavy like a h22a. It weighs about the same as a b18c
2. Ls tranny because of the longer gearing.
3. I haven't seen anyone of the web do it yet.

You don't need hi-revs with turbo. Tony V on the old b-troop had a turbo b20 and people said his car was the fastest street honda ever.

It's the same swap as a b18c/b you might need to change the intake? if it dont clear the hood.on the tranny what ever u can get your hands on ls or gsr. I Only notice 300rpm diffrent.

Mine is a b20b vtec turbo ls tranny and i love it ,havent run at the track yet. Need more tuning only half tune.(360hp@10psi on pump gas) Putting in a 3bar map soon so I can run 15psi.oh and its in a 95 coupe but it should be the same in your 96 the only diffrent is in motor mounts....

My old setup.... turbo B20, boosting 12 lbs daily with DRAG 3 kit w/HKS parts. Ran a best time on slicks of 11.6 @ 119mph. Was fast as fawk, but I got bored of it and went H22. Use a GSR tranny.... trust me, I had both and tried both out. The GSR tranny pulls the car harder & faster after 3rd gear and is better for racing.

1) handling won't be as bad, if you throw in some motor mount bushings and suspension bushings

2)imo, the b20B would be great for a turbo set up than the b20z. lower compression, less tuning hassle.
as for the tranny, longer gear ratio off an ls is a good thing. i wouldn't doubt a gsr out handling too much tourque, although there are already a few GSR turbos out.

3)let me email, a friend of mine and see if he can pull some pics up. it's a b20b turbo by the way.

newman: have you posted on here before? i've seen pics off a white eg about a year ago on here, with the h22 set up, and he loved it.

if i can recall. someone from the tech section told me about this.
the jdm b20z is a counterpart of the usdm b20b. i don't believe honda of japan made b20b's at least that's what i was told. by comparison:
b20b(usdm)= 8.8:1 cr
b20z(usdm)= 9.6:1 cr

the theory is: lower compression, better tuning for turbo

hope this helps in some way. i'm just getting into boosting myself. good luck.

have you read the latest issue on ss regarding mr. spoon's point on frankenstein engines? that also might give you a little info regarding b20's.

the b20b came in the older crvs i think it was 96-98? and the b20z came in the 99-01 crv...the b20b has a comp ratio of 8.8 while the b20z has a ratio of 9.6 (the same as the jdm b20b)

oh and i believe newman was running the jdm b20b.

My friend has the same setup in his 99CX and his best run is low 11s, also in slicks. But for some reason he got more space under the hood.

btw. he's running FMAX turbo kit boosting 13.

im thinking about doing the b20 turbo set up but im wondering would you get the similar results out of a b18b with a revhard or drag turbo kit? also what was your whole setup with the b20b turbo because im really interested in doing this swap

this is my next plan for my 00 coupe in the future (hope not too distant, but i am going to concentrate more in college).

how much can a complete b20 swap be had?
how does the b20 into ek/ej run stock? no crvtec no FI?
what turbo to use for b20? kit or custom made?

i just want a stronger daily driver, thats why i might be interested in just a swap, lose my sohc vtec but have more torque. would a b20 tranny work? my civic is automatic and since this will be a daily driver, i plan to keep it auto. should i use the automatic ls tranny instead? is turbo or is supercharge is better for the b20?

The LS intake manifold should bolt up to the B20, since they are practically the same. The stock intake mani is tall and wouldn't clear the hood.

To my knowledge, you can not buy a b20 swap, they have to be peiced together, you can buy the block but that is basically all you can use.

how does the b20 into ek/ej run stock? no crvtec no FI?
To many variables to factor in but i say 14-16's

what turbo to use for b20? kit or custom made?
b series kit's should fit. Custom is always nicer though.

would a b20 tranny work?
B20 tranny will NOT work, you gotta use any other b series tranny

my civic is automatic and since this will be a daily driver, i plan to keep it auto. should i use the automatic ls tranny instead?
I hope you know the auto ls tranny swap is a wiring nightmare but whatever you want, if i was you i would ditch the slush box

is turbo or is supercharge is better for the b20?
Oh boy... I'll be nice, most people like turbo

the 408. rarely see anyone from my area. i'm from milpitas myself. a few of my friends are on that AVR crew. if you've ever heard of them. staying solo.

a complete b20 will cost you between 3 to 4k. like i mentioned, a friend of mine is running a b20 turbo and hitting 12's, mid and low. i've seen b20's running 14's and 15's, bonestock. he's running a drag kit, but can't confirm what generation.

good luck

by the way, what college are you enrolled at?

1. No, not as heavy as a H series
2. GSR trans, no question
3. Lots of these set-ups exist. Photos online, I dono where but I'm sure there has to be some.

a B20 longblock is only $800, then all you need is the intake exhaust manifolds and a tranny (and a few other parts), so maybe $1500-2000

let me clear this up before i get flamed at. the same friend i mentioned above is has the b20 turbo setup. now, i can't confirm if it is legitimately a drag kit, because i only saw the motor, bonestock, and he recently got a turbo kit. i haven't seen him for a year. yes, he paid 3k for his motor including shipping. all clear.
