D15B7 to D15Z1 swap WHAT WILL I NEED?
Hello,
I’ve just purchased a 93 Honda Civic Hatchback (looks like CX with A/C) the owner said that he had a D15B7 engine installed (D15B7 number on the engine block) in it and I want to swap the engine with D15Z1 for fuel economy? I have never performed an engine swap so can anyone tell if I will need anything else (connectors, hoses, ECU, different bolts, mounts, etc) besides the D15Z1 engine to complete the swap? Any recommendation on where I can get D15Z1? Thank you.

Honestly, I don't think it's worth the time and effort for fuel economy. The D15B7 is just a basic single cam 16valve non vtec. The D15Z1 is basicly a single cam vtec, only it's desined for more economy, not power. I mean really, you have a stock DX motor, why go swap that for what, 5-10 more miles a gallon, if that? My honest thoughts though, you have a stock DX motor, it isn't fast, but fast enough to get to freeway speeds, and it gets good gas mileage. I think it would be a waste of time and a little bit of a disapointment for you to go threw and do that swap. Not trying to be rude or anything, just save you some time, money, and greif.
The reason that I am getting into this situation is my current job location (100 miles a day, 500 miles a week) D15Z1 should be getting about 50 mpg (my drive is all highway) and with a little investment into the motor swap I can recover the costs within a few month driving. I am trying to estimate how much will it take to perform the swap, so far I was able to discover that I will need:
1. D15z1 motor
2. D15Z1 ECU
3. D15Z1 O2 SENSOR
4. VTEC-C WIRING CONVERSION HARNESS
5. EG VALVE wiring to be performed “manually”
6. O2 sensor wiring to be performed “manually”
Trying to figure out what else will I need and how much will it take.

Hey Yuriy,
Ive been doing a little research and it seems were in the exact same boat with questions on this swap. I am curious as to whay you ended up doing. Did you even get it done? If so, what were the seperate parts that you had to buy? Did it end up working for you in the end? Did you like the D15z1?
Thanks

You dont necessarily need to get the Z1 ecu, have your P06 chipped to run VTEC. If you have a CX, there is already vtec wired from ecu to right strut tower...all you would need to do is run wire from head to the wiring, I did this in a 92 CX hatch, noticed a good deal of economy in fuel. Personally i would recommend against it, its honestly not worth the cost, but everyone has an opinion.
Sorry for not being very specific but I think you’re thinking I’m going from a functional engine to a d15z1. I have a 92 (Canadian model) cx with a blown head gasket and we don’t want to pump money into an engine that has been burning oil from the second we bought it. After doing some research the d15z1 seemed like the engine to get for fuel economy so it is for that reason I’m trying to find out what I need to do/purchase before someone would put that engine in. Is it a relatively painless procedure or is it? Anyone have any ideas or suggestions?
Your best bet would be to find either a wrecked or rotten VX cheap with a good engine, this way you can get everything that goes with the EGR setup, as well as the engine harness, ECU, etc.

im also having a problem with this swap. i have a eg coupe dx. it recently had a d15b and i just put a d15z1 in it. everything lined up perfectly except the wireharness. i have both the wireharness for the d15b nd the d15z and neither of them work corectly. i need help asap. the d15z harness does not connect to the plugs on the car. theres one on each side tht doesnt fit. i was wondering if i should try splicing the plugs on from the other harness but idkkk because on one of the plugs from the non v harness has 9 wires going to it. and the plug on the vtec harness has 8. ? someone please help me. i wanna get this swap finished today
