Hello, I've been having A LOT of trouble with starters dying in my car. I'm pretty sure it's not the starters fault but something else.

I bought the car ('93 Civic Hatchback DX) when I was 15 and sat for about 6 months. The car had the original starter in it when I bought it but then it died about 4 months after I started driving it. That one then died 10 months later and then my 3rd one put into it was almost dead before I took it to the shop about a month ago. Now my less-than-a-month old starter is about to die again.

After they replaced the first one on warranty they also changed my battery, fuse box and one other electrical thing I can't remember.

When I first get the starter in, it starts in a split second. Now I have to hold it for a couple of seconds, let it die, then it starts instantly. Sometimes it'll be barely going when I try starting it the first time then eventually it'll get going fine. The d15 engine runs perfectly fine (277,000 kms) and I'll only have this problem if the car isn't started for about 3 hours. If I start it before then it turns on fine.

Other than the starter what could be the problem? When they first replaced the started they asked me if the windshield was replaced recently because there could be a pinched wire under it along the bottom. I heard it could be a clogged intake manifold and to check the injectors.

I need to know because I'm selling it to a friend soon for a 1990 Prelude that I'm buying tomorrow for 1500$ that is next to mint condition and I don't want to screw my friend over.

My thoughts exactly.

 

Dont buy reman parts first of all, and second you need to get the starter amperage checked. it really shouldnt take over 150 amps to turn the motor but if it does then other problems may exist. like bad bearings, bad oil pump, really anything that may cause resistance in the intial startup that would make the starter work harder then it should.

I don't buy the starters. I leave it up to the shop that I first took it to. I only had to pay for the first one as they were all under warranty. All I know is that they're from a place in Calgary and they went with a second brand on the latest one. I'm sure it's not a faulty starter.

That's gsr, I'll look into those things. I'm mostly preoccupied with getting the Prelude in perfect working order and learning to drive a stick lol. Hopefully it won't die until this weekend.
