My gf "is not worried about performance", but I want to make sure the tires have good traction in the Michigan winters (snow, slush, what traction is available on ice), and in the summertime, rain. Dry performance, mostly a compound that is a little sticky to help keep the tires from locking up if she needs to get on the brakes hard (no abs) and to improve braking distance (safety).

I think a 'touring' tire would be a good choice for her. Does anyone here have any suggestions? Her dad checked into it, and he thinks Goodyear Integrity would be good rubber, but I looked up reviews on google and they appear adequate in summer, and marginal in winter conditions and appear to be a long wearing tire.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Falken Ziex ZE-512, they are relatively cheap, all season tires.

I have them on my RSX, and they grip fairly well. I live in MS and don't have too much snow, but tons of rain, and it still handles pretty good even though the road is wet.

 

I used to run Michelin MXV4's on our 1992Si back in the 90's. I used them as a all season tire. There were good in the snow here in CT and the snow in VT and were good on the highway. We would go skiing in that car and never had snow tires.

Even when we went to VT every winter weekend in the 96/97 and 97/98 winters, never had a problem and we would travel to different mountains because rota92 was on a ski race team.

I even ran that same tire on my first 2 Subaru Legacy GT's as a all season tire.

 

since your in MI, i would recommend putting studded tires in the winter, and use cheaper tires for the "normal" weather.

just make sure the cheap tire that you get has a good sidewall, the bad ones generate a huge bubble if you nail the tire to a curb too much.

as for myself i got dominator tires for my civic, which isnt quite up there in price or the bottom in quality, its like the 3rd cheapest from the bottom when i got them. lasted me for 3+ years and still running fine!

I dont race, take hard corners, etc. its just a stock DD, so the tires are more than good enough for me.

how much is she looking to spend. i work at les schwab here in WA which is the largest tire dealer on the west coast. if your looking for cheap but relatively good all around performance w/ good ratings in all weather look at the federal formoza FD1. the next step up from there which is my favorite tire for DD and all weather is the OHTSU ZEXIUS 427i. IMO the best tire for the money. the toyo eclipse is also a great tire but will run at the top end and cost about 120 a tire. the feds are about 60 a tire and the ohtsu is about 90 per tire. good luck bro.

 

Spend a little more and find a good set of Michelins, you cant beat the ride, they wear great, and really are all around superior to all others

 

He doesnt need studded tires. Not to mention they're illegal. I have Dunlop wintersport m3's on my civic and they seem to be pretty good. I think i paid like 300 total after shipping and having them installed. Pretty decent grip in the winter, and Ive driven on them all through the spring and summer and I havent had any problems on wet or dry pavement so far.

federal formoza fd1 is the best bang for your buck tire! i use on all my daily drivers and its what i suggest to other people.

except i use federal 595 on my gf's prelude.

 

I'd run a Flaken Ziex ZE912. They're quality, affordable, and have a good mileage warranty.

 

Yup, studded tires are illegal... I think that happened in the 1970s-1980s sometime. GREAT on ice, but they tear up bare pavement. Bridgestone Blizzaks are great for winter use, but I heard they wear really fast in the summer.

Her dad swears by Goodyear Assurance (the regular ones that have the v-tread) tires for his Accord (Michelin makes a similarly designed tire as well), and I liked the BF Goodrich Touring TAs I had on a Grand Am SE v6. They were well matched to the softer suspension than the GrandAm GT, and looking into it, the new Traction T/A looks to improve upon the all weather traction offered by the satisfactory all around Touring TAs.

As for the other tires mentioned... I've heard of Falken amongst import performance types, and never heard of federal. My Grandpa swears by Michelin's satisfactory performance and long life, and Dunlop's been around forever making everything from plain car tires to superbike racing tires and even tennis *****.

I have Fuzion HRI perfomance radials for daily driving. They are fantastic. Reliable and not noisey at all.
